Analytical Philosophy and Christian Philosophy Park, Byoung-Jun (Sogang Univ.) Analytical philosophy has become an important philosophical tradition in the present time. ‘To philosophize analytically’ goes beyond the meaning of simply thinking analytically. This is because analytical philosophy naturally draws a boundary from the existing philosophies through analytical thinking against general synthetical thinking. This study aims to compare analytical philosophy with Christian philosophy which stands on the side of more traditional philosophy. Could these two philosophies that have distinctly different stances be compatible? Comparing these two philosophies with their widely different positions would be meaningful in the comparison itself unless either side stubbornly sticks to one’s philosophy with severance of conversation. In comparing the two philosophies, the first question is the issue of identity related to the fundamentals of those philosophies. This study will examine the basic stance of each philosophy within a large category, and the two philosophies will be compared from the point of view in which analytical philosophy accommodates Christian philosophy. First of all, this study sees the analytic philosophy from two points of view. One is analytical philosophy as one of the ‘philosophical methodologies’, and the other is analytical philosophy as a ‘systematic philosophy’. It is comparatively easy for Christian philosophy to accept analytical philosophy as a methodology. However, the possibility of connecting analytical philosophy with Christian philosophy in that sense is not that simple. That is because of the nature and identity of two philosophies that show distinct differences. Nevertheless, through the expressions of interest from analytic philosophy on the themes of traditional philosophies in present time, we could still gauge the possibility of connecting the two philosophies. This study primarily aims to reveal the characteristics and differences of the two philosophies by examining the issues regarding the nature and identity of the analytical philosophy and Christian philosophy. And subsequently, through comparing ‘analytic metaphysics’ of analytical philosophy with traditional metaphysics, and examining the existential concepts, the possibility of connecting the two philosophies will be gauged. True knowledge and fundamental questions on existence were among the core questions that separate different thoughts of philosophy from long time before. These two philosophies are no exceptions. Whether the grounds of knowledge and existence should be limited in the experience or beyond experience, in fact, could show considerable difference according to what attitude and what interests we have philosophically. Therefore, in comparing these two philosophies, the issue of selectiveness still remains even if we take analytic philosophy as a philosophy of methodology.

‘분석적으로 철학한다는 것’은 오늘날 중요한 철학적 전통이 되 었다. ‘분석적으로 철학함’은 단순히 분석적으로 사유한다는 의미 를 넘어서 있다. 그것은 분석철학이 종합적 사유에 대응하는 분석 적 사유를 통해서 자연스럽게 기존의 철학과 구별되는 철학의 경 계 짓기를 하고 있기 때문이다. 본고는 분석철학과 전통 철학의 입 장에 서 있는 그리스도교 철학을 비교한다. 서로 분명한 입장차를 가지고 있는 분석철학과 그리스도교 철학은 서로 양립 가능할 수 있는 것인가? 대화를 단절하고 자기주장만을 고집한다면 모를까 현격한 입장차를 보이는 두 철학을 비교해 봄은 그 자체로 의미 있 는 일이다. 두 철학을 비교함에 있어서 우선하는 질문은 두 철학의 본질과 관련된 정체성 문제이다. 본고는 기본적으로 두 철학의 기 본 입장을 커다란 윤곽 아래서 살피고, 분석철학의 그리스도교 철 학의 수용의 관점에서 두 철학을 비교할 것이다. 본고는 우선 분석철학을 두 가지 관점에서 본다. 하나는 ‘철학적 방법론’으로서의 분석철학이고, 다른 하나는 ‘체계적 철학’으로서 의 분석철학이다. 그리스도교 철학이 방법론으로서의 분석철학을 수용하는 것은 비교적 용이하다. 그러나 체계적 철학으로서의 분 석철학과 그리스도교 철학의 조우 가능성은 간단하지 않다. 그것 은 분명한 차이를 보이는 두 철학의 본질과 정체성에 기인한다. 그 럼에도 오늘날 전통 철학의 주제들에 대한 분석철학의 관심 표명 을 통하여 두 철학의 조우 가능성을 타진해 볼 수 있다. 본고는 우선 분석철학과 그리스도교 철학의 본질과 정체성에 대 한 문제를 검토함으로써 두 철학의 일반적 특성과 차이를 드러낸 다. 이어서 오늘날 분석철학의 ‘분석적 형이상학’과 전통 형이상학 의 비교, 그리고 존재 개념의 검토를 통하여 두 철학의 만남의 가 능성을 타진한다. 268 가톨릭철학⋅제17호【연구논문】 참된 지식과 실재의 근거 물음은 오래전부터 사유를 갈라놓는 철학의 핵심적인 물음 가운데 하나였다. 두 철학도 예외가 아니다. 지식과 실재의 근거를 경험에 국한시킬 것인지 혹은 경험을 넘어 서까지 둘 것인지는 사실 우리가 철학적으로 어떤 태도를 취하며 어떤 관심을 갖느냐에 따라서 상당한 차이를 보일 수 있다. 이것은 두 철학을 비교함에 있어서 우리가 분석철학을 방법론의 철학으로 취해도 여전히 선택이 요구되는 과제로 남는다.
