The Influence of Augustine’s Life Experience on His Notion of Values Education Park, Seung-Chan (The Catholic Univ. of Korea) In this article, I will systematically reconstruct Augustine’s fundamental views on education by considering his life-experiences. I show that because of his own negative experiences as a child, Augustine rejected the cramming method and emphasized education that respects the personality and autonomy of the pupils. He recognized that the effectiveness of education through verbal explanation instead of through practical examples was limited and criticized the teacher- centered model of knowledge transmission. He believed that the pupil is the subject of education and the one who should play an active role in it. Furthermore, distinguishing between ‘enjoyment’(frui) and ‘use’(uti), Augustine stressed values education as a means of changing pupils’ lives and proposed a system of education that was based on the principle of love. He believed that values education must not be coercive and that its purpose must be achieved through role models. Using good and bad role models, Augustine preached that only the teacher’s own example and love could influence pupils to learn. This paper concludes by providing ways in which Augustine’s experience and theories can be applied for the benefit of the Korean education system.

본 논문에서는 아우구스티누스가 교육과 관련하여 직접 이야기 한 내용들을 그의 생애 체험에 비추어 체계적으로 재구성하고자 한다. 아우구스티누스는 자신이 어렸을 때 체험했던 부정적인 체 험을 바탕으로 일방적인 주입식 교육을 거부하고 학생의 인격과 자율성을 존중하는 교육을 강조했다. 또는 그는 언어를 통한 교육 의 한계에 대한 자각을 바탕으로 교사 중심의 지식전달 모델을 비 판했다. 학습자야말로 능동적인 역할을 해야 하는 교육의 주체라 는 것이다. 또한 아우구스티누스는 삶의 변화를 위한 가치교육의 중요성을 강조하면서 향유와 사용의 구분을 토대로 사랑의 원리에 따른 교육을 실천할 것을 제안한다. 그렇지만 이러한 가치교육은 강압적이어서는 안 되고 역할모델을 통해서 제시되는 모범에 따라 서 이루어져야 한다. 아우구스티누스의 생애에서 만난 잘못된 역 할모델들과 훌륭한 역할모델들에게서 얻은 교훈을 바탕으로 아우 구스티누스는 교사의 사랑에 기반한 자기 제시야말로 교육의 핵심 이라고 가르친다. 끝으로 위대한 스승 아우구스티누스가 제시한 구체적인 체험과 충고들을 통해 우리나라의 교육현실을 재조명해 보았다.
