This study examines significance and roles of Korea-China FTA for East Asian economic integration. Presently, Korea-China FTA makes slow progress, since Korea is concerned about its deepening political and economic dependence on China. This paper, therefore, suggests that the plan for the economic cooperation between Korea and China has to be sought not from a bilateral FTA but from the multilateral East Asian FTA. The main arguments of this study are as follows. Firstly, Korea-China FTA has to be pushed forward not only as a means of the preoccupancy of export markets but also as a means of East Asian economic integration. East Asian economic integration contributes to the increase of welfare and trade worldwide, since East Asia builds a natural trading bloc. Korea-China FTA could facilitate East Asian economic integration by triggering a domino effect of bilateral FTAs among East Asian countries. Secondly, the plan for East Asian FTA among ASEAN+3 countries could be more efficient than the plan for a stepwise economic integration through the expansion of bilateral FTAs including Korea-China FTA. The multilateral negotiation plan for East Asian FTA makes good use of the existing economic cooperation system, the Chiang Mai Initivative. In addition, it dispels small East Asian countries' concerns about the Chinese or the Japanese hegemony in East Asia.

한․중 FTA 추진이 한국의 대중국 의존도 심화에 대한 우려로 지지부진한 현 상황에서, 본 논문은 한․중 간 제도적 경제협력 방안을 동아시아 경제통합과 연계하여 살펴보고 있다. 본 논문의 핵심적인 주장은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한․중 FTA를 포함한 양자간 FTA를 추진하는 것보다는 아세안+3의 틀에서 다자간 FTA를 추진하는 것이 동아시아 경제통합을 위한 합리적인 방안이 될 수 있다. 아세안+3의 틀에서 다자간 FTA를 추진하는 것은 기존의 경제․금융 협력 틀을 이용한다는 장점을 가질 뿐만 아니라 한국의 대중국 의존도 심화에 대한 우려를 불식시킴으로써 한․중 간 경제협력을 심화시키는 방안이 될 수 있다. 둘째, 한․중 FTA가 추진된다고 하더라도 동아시아 경제통합을 촉진하는 방향으로 추진되어야 한다. 동아시아 지역은 자연적 무역블록을 형성하고 있기 때문에 동아시아 경제통합은 역내 후생증진 뿐만 아니라 전 세계 후생증진에 기여할 수 있다. 한․중 FTA는 도미노 효과를 유발함으로써 동아시아 경제통합에 기여하도록 추진될 필요가 있다.
