This paper attempts to analyze the methodology of economics, specifically critical realism. The global economic crisis 2008/2009 has occurred much debate concerning mainstream economic theory and its policy. The most important thing that this crisis has done for economics is to show that mainstream economics is wrong. With such a argument interest in economic methodology has grown, because the problem of mainstream economics is closely connected with the research methodology of mainstream economics. This study is attracting attention as critical realism to analyze the alternative methodology to explore the possibility. Critical realism, with its focus on the causal structures underlying observable phenomena, is one of the significant developments of recent years in the philosophy of social science. Critical realism focuses consciously upon social ontology, in contrast, mainstream economics and its economic methodology tend to neglect ontology. This alternative methodology in economics is the economic reality is what it looks to capture the problem should be concentrated on. Critical realism in economics could be more than just an eloquent advocacy of alternative way of seeing in economic methodology. In the paper is discussed that critical realism can be a significant methodology of alternative economics or not. First, this study is to introduce critical realism. Next, this study compares to the mainstream economics and critical realism. Finally, the limitations and possibilities of critical realism are indicated.

경제학은 주로 가설 연역적 실증분석, 경험적 조사나 통계 분석을 통해 유효한 지식을 획득한다. 그러나 이러한 경제학 연구방법론에 대한 비판은 그 간 꾸준히 제기 되었다. 이런 과정을 거쳐 획득한 지식은 높은 논리적 정합성을 갖춘 것에 비해 현실 설명력이 낮아 올바른 경제이론과 정책정립을 호도할 가능성이 있다는 것이 비판의 핵심이다. 이러한 비판 중에 특히 비판적 실재론은 주류경제학방법론 속에 확인되는 존재론의 부재가 현실과 이론의 괴리로 연결된다고 지적한다. 이에 따라 비판적 실재론은 사회적 존재론 정립을 경제학 연구방법론의 개선을 위해 선행되어 해결되어야 할 과제라고 주장한다. 즉 대안적 경제학방법론이 경제적 실재가 무엇이며 이를 포착하는 문제에 집중되어야 한다고 본다. 본 연구는 새로운 과학철학으로 주목받고 있는 비판적 실재론을 분석하여 대안적 경제학방법론으로의 가능성을 타진한다. 이를 위해 먼저 비판적 실재론이 무엇인지 살펴보고 이를 경제학에 도입하려는 움직임을 소개한다. 다음으로, 비판적 실재론의 경제학방법론과 주류경제학의 방법론을 비교분석한다. 마지막으로 비판적 실재론을 평가하며 비판적 실재론의 가능성과 한계를 타진한다.
