This study explores the directions of the unification education on unification costs by checking its wrong perception and finding its right logic. Therefor it found the right understand on unification costs as follows. First, it proved that the perception that unification costs would be very huge, is a wrong one, and pointed that division costs would high than unification costs. Second, it pointed that the perception that unification costs would be increasing continuously and empharsized that the prepared integration model by pubic consensus in advance would be important to save unification costs. Third, it pointed that the perception that unification costs would be consuming money, is a wrong one, and empharsized that most of unification costs would be unification investments for the future. Finally the directions of the unification education on unification costs should bring its right understanding and perceptions for the Korean unification continuously.

본 연구는 통일비용에 대한 잘못된 인식이 통일의 무관심 내지 불필요성을 조장하고 있다는 문제의식에서 기존의 통일비용에 대한 인식을 점검하고 통일비용에 대한 올바른 이해를 강화시켜 줄 수 있는 통일교육의 방향을 모색하고자 하였다. 이에 연구결과 다음과 같은 통일비용에 대한 올바른 이해와 인식을 위한 통일교육의 방향을 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 통일비용의 크기와 관련하여 통일비용은 막대할 것이라는 인식의 오류을 지적하고, 분단비용은 분단 기간 동안 장기간 지속적으로 발생하는 비용인 데 반해, 통일비용은 통일 이후 단기간 한시적으로 발생되는 비용이라는 특성에 기초하여 분단비용이 통일비용보다 크다는 인식을 강화시킬 필요가 있다. 둘째, 통일비용의 증감 가능성과 관련하여 통일비용은 계속하여 증대될 것이라는 인식의 오류를 지적하고, 통일비용에 대하여 사전에 충분한 논의 속에서 국민적 합의를 바탕을 둔 철저한 통일준비를 할 경우 통일비용을 줄일 수 있다는 이해와 인식을 강화시킬 필요가 있다. 셋째, 통일비용의 지출 성격과 관련하여 통일비용은 소모적 지출이라는 인식의 오류를 지적하고, 통일비용은 미래의 통일편익으로 보상받을 수 있는 생산적 투자라는 인식을 강화시킬 필요가 있다. 결론적으로 통일비용의 크기, 증감 가능성, 지출 성격 등과 관련된 잘못된 이해와 인식의 수정을 통한 올바른 이해와 인식으로의 전환하는 노력을 통일비용 관련 통일교육의 방향으로 설정하여야 할 것이다.
