This paper is designed to explore the development process and future needs of art therapy studies in Korea with a view to contribute to their progress in a balanced way. For this purpose, a structural analysis was conducted into the number of theses that have been applied for master degree at the regular courses opened by domestic graduate schools from 2001 to 2011. The number of theses by institution and year was counted statistically to see how the studies on art therapy have been hitherto progressed as well as the subjects and topics of the studies were also classified by category to find diversity of and changes in them. The basic data for this paper were collected from the Internet websites of National Assembly Library (http://www.nanet.go.kr/) and Korea Education & Research Information Service (http://www.riss.kr/) for the theses that have been applied for master degree at the regular courses of graduate schools in the area of art therapy. A total of 1083 theses were put to analysis that were applied for master degree at the regular courses of 20 graduate schools in the area of art therapy excluding one that did not post any information about the number of theses applied for. The findings of the study could be summed up as follows: For the last decade, the number of studies on art therapy in Korea has recorded a steep increase from, an obvious evidence for almost vertical upturn for the period. Divided by sort of problems facing the subjects, a certain evidence showing that more studies on art therapy have been conducted to the non-disabled subjects than to the disabled ones. Classified by category of the study theme, featuring the aspects that attention was focused mostly on the issue of sentiment in art therapy in reflection of contemporary people’s concern for emotional issues. Latly, it is the writer’s wish that this paper may serve as a step stone for further progress of studies on art therapy in Korea that has grown at a steep pace.

본 연구는 한국 미술치료의 발전현황과 향후 연구 분야의 필요성에 대해 알리고자 국내개설된 정규 미술치료 석사과정 청구논문을 구조 분석함으로서 2001년부터 2011년 현재까지 발표된 석사학위 청구논문을 각 대학원별 및 연도별 편수를 통계 처리하여 그 동안 미술치료연구가 어떻게 발전되어 왔는지에 대해 살펴보고 논문제목에 나타나는 연구대상과 연구주제를 분류하여 그 다양성과 변화를 파악함으로서 향후 미술치료 연구의 편중되지 않는 발전에 기여하고자 함에 있다. 연구자료 수집은 국회도서관 (http://www.nanet.go.kr/)과 한국교육학술정보원(http://www.riss.kr/)의 인터넷 사이트에서 미술치료로 검색된 정규과정 미술치료 대학원 석사학위 청구논문으로 제한을 두고 자료 수집을 하였으며 21개 대학원 중 아직 청구논문이 발표되지 않은 대학원 한 곳을 제외한 20개 정규 미술치료 석사과정 논문 1083편을 대상으로 연구동향을 알아보았다. 본 연구의 결과 지난 10여 년 동안 한국 미술치료 학계의 연구는 10여 년 동안 수직에 가까운 발전하였으며, 미술치료 대상자는 장애인 대상보다 비장애인을 대상으로 더 많이 연구되었고 연구주제별 구분을 통해 현대인의 정서적인 부분을 많이 연구해왔음을 알 수 있다. 연구자는 본 연구결과가 급성장해온 한국 미술치료학계의 향후 더 발전된 연구방향을 위
