This article purports to study the World of the Lotus Sanctuary among pure lands in the Avatamsaka Sutra, probing its significance. Heretofore, the central thought of the Avatamsaka Sutra has been understood to comprise mind only, no hindrance, and Bodhisattva way, while the World of the Lotus Sanctuary as the symbol of pure land in the Avatamsaka Sutra has been given no serious attention as a matter of fact. The investigation of the pure land in the Avatamsaka Sutra is essential in expanding the area of discussion about the thought of the Sutra in the future and understanding the ultimate purpose of the preaching of the Sutra for our practice. The World of the Lotus Sanctuary, based upon the Avatamsaka Sutra, is essentially the world recognized only by Bodhisattvas, while the Bodhisattvas in the world preach through limitlessly various types of method in order to save all the sentient beings. The World of the Lotus Sanctuary, shown by the Bodhisattvas, is a Saha-loka-dhatu full of light as the light itself. Therefore, this world is recognized at last through light. The World of the Lotus Sanctuary as the main pure land in the Avatamsaka Sutra is not a pure land segregated from our world but a world symbolized from the world under the Bodhi tree. The world is a symbolization of the Buddha world recognized through meditation on the basis of the Saha-loka-dhatu where we are living now.

본고는 󰡔화엄경󰡕에서 설해진 정토 가운데 가장 중요한 연화장세계에 대해서 고찰하고 그 의미를 추구하는데 그 목적이 있다. 그동안 󰡔화엄경󰡕의 중심사상은 유심, 무애, 보살도 등으로 이해되어 왔다. 반면에 󰡔화엄경󰡕 정토의 상징인 연화장세계에 대해서는 그다지 주목되지 못한 것이 사실이다. 󰡔화엄경󰡕의 정토에 대한 고찰은 향후 󰡔화엄경󰡕 사상에 대한 논의의 영역을 확대시키고, 󰡔화엄경󰡕이 설해진 궁극적 목적을 이해하고 실천하기 위해 필요한 작업이다. 연화장세계는 󰡔화엄경󰡕을 기반으로 하며 보살들만이 인식할 수 있는 세계이긴 하지만, 그 안에서 보살들은 전 중생을 구제하기 위해 무한한 방법을 통원하여 설법한다. 보살들이 보여주는 연화장세계는 광명으로 가득찬 광명 자체의 사바세계이다. 따라서 광명으로 인해 비로소 인식되는 세계이다. 󰡔화엄경󰡕의 주정토인 연화장세계는 타방 정토가 아니다. 보리수 하를 상징한 세계이다. 지금 우리가 살고 있는 사바세계에 터전을 두고 명상을 통해 인식할 수 있는 부처세계를 상징한 것이라고 할 수 있다.
