George Crumb is considered as one of the first Western composers who used Non-Western musical elements. Not only he used Non-Western elements, but also adapted their concept of music which is different from that of Western Music. The Western concept of music evolved from non directional to directional music, that is to say the goal oriented music.
Here, in this piece Crumb suggested another way of evolving. He used mosaic idea like Machaut of ars noval era and also used new timbres imitating Non-Western music. This article track the process of composition in realizing these ideas.
The influences to Crumb’s music is summarized as this:
1. The natural atmosphere where he was born
2. Poetry
3. Quotation
4. The great composers: Chopin, Bartok, Debussy
5. His character: exploration beyond the boundary
The first movement provide the basic materials to entire piece, 2nd movement gives the idea of mosaic organization as well as his own timbre effect. 3rd movement used quotation from his own piece, Makrokosmos II, 4th movement are composed through the technique of isorhythm, and the final movement is conclusion of this piece as well as this Makrokosmos series.

조지 크럼은 비서국적 음악적 요소들을 도입한 최초의 서구작곡가들중 하나이다. 그는 단지 비서구적 음악의 물질적인 요소뿐 아니라 비서구적 음악의 철학과 사운드등까지도 자신의 음악에 도입했다. 서구의 음악의 경향은 비논리적인 음악에서 논리적인 음악으로, 조성의 발전을 통해클라이막스를 만드는 방법과 그것을 잘 해결하는 것을 강구해 왔다. 이것을 우리는 목표지향적인 음악이라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 조지크럼은 또 다른 방법의 방향성을 제시한다.
마치 아르스노바의 마쇼처럼 모자이크적인 아이디어를 도입하고, 비서구적 사운드를 탐험해 나간다. 이 글은 크럼의 실현하는 과정을 마크로코스모스 3의 분석을 통해 추적한다. 그리고 마크로코스모스 3에 대한 분석이다. 1악장은 이 곡 전체에 대한 기본적 모티브, 음계를 제공하는 역할을 하고, 2악장은 그의 특징적인 ‘소리만들기’외에 모자이크 아이디어를 사용해서 작곡되었다. 3악장은 그자신의 곡인마크로코스모스II에서 인용되는 구절을 사용하며, 4악장은 이소리듬기법으로 작곡되었다. 5악장은 이 곡에 대한 완결로서도 중요하지만, 전체 마크로코스모스의 완결로서의 역할도 담당한다.
