The purpose of this research is to analyze the political image of DMZ(demilitarized zone) that appears in popular foreign portal sites. The reason of this analysis is that DMZ is the only place that symbolizes Korea and its military and political image has been mainly emphasized even though it includes eco-cultural heritage. Also, this research reflects the intention of improving established image of Korea has been interlocked with DMZ. This research analyzed images of DMZ drawn by the most influential portal sites including Google and Yahoo. As result, DMZ was still defined by military and political perspective in many countries. Regardless of kinds of portal sites and nations, many people are using the information from the Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. Futhermore, the ranking of the word 'DMZ' in searching lists from portal sites of most countries was relatively low, so its eco-cultural value was not fully conveyed. To solve this problem, future prestige of DMZ should be precisely defined to minimize confusion that comes from established image of DMZ. Also, consistency of policies should be maintained by enhancing communication between the central government and local govern- ments. Additionally, eco-cultural value of DMZ must be maximized by advertising it either domestically or internationally. Active participation in the Wikipedia can also helps to create prestige of DMZ. Therefore, ecological and cultural value of DMZ should be developed and verified academically so that it can achieve recognition as the world heritage by coorperation of international organizations. And by active publicity of the result through media and portal sites from all over the world, DMZ should be recognized as a new place that includes peace, communication and lives.

본 연구는 해외 유명 인터넷 포탈 사이트에 나타나 있는 DMZ의 정치적 이미지를 분석하였다. DMZ의 이미지를 분석한 이유는, DMZ가 다양한 생태문화 유산이 존재하는 우리의 자산임에도 불구하고 해외에는 주로 정치적 이미지만이 강조되어 왔기 때문이다. 따라서, 본 연구는 그동안 정치적 이미지로 불이익을 받아온 DMZ의 위상을 회복하기위한 전략의 초석으로, 현재의 DMZ에 대한 이미지를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해, 본 연구는 세계 최대의 인터넷 포탈 사이트인 구글과 야후에 나타나 있는 DMZ의 정치적 이미지를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 조사대상 국가의 과반 수 이상에서 DMZ를 정치적･군사적 관점에서 규정하고 있음이 발견되었다. 주목할 것은, 모든 나라가 온라인 백과사전인 위키피디아(Wikipedia)의 내용을 인용하고 있다는 것이다. 그리고 조사대상 국가의 대부분이 DMZ에 대한 검색순위가 중･하위에 머무르고 있어 DMZ의 생태문화적 가치에 대한 해외홍보가 부족한 것으로 드러났다. 이러한 문제 해결을 위해 본 연구는 네 가지의 대안을 제시하였다. 첫째, 정부는 DMZ의 미래 위상에 대해 명확히 규정하여 해외에서의 DMZ 이미지에 대한 혼란을 최소화해야 한다. 둘째, 중앙정부와 지방정부간의 소통을 강화하여 DMZ 정책의 시너지 효과를 극대화해야 한다. 셋째, 국내외 홍보강화를 위해 DMZ의 생태문화적 가치를 세계에 알릴 수 있는 다양한 프로그램을 개발해야 한다. 넷째, 온라인 백과사전인 위키피디아(Wikipedia)에 대한 정책적 참여를 통해 DMZ의 이미지를 적극적으로 창조해 나아가야 한다. 요약하면, 그동안 정치적 이미지로 불이익을 받아온 DMZ의 이미지를 개선하기 위해 DMZ의 생태문화적 가치를 개발하여 학술적으로 검증받은 후, 국제기구들과 협력하여 DMZ가 세계적 유산으로 인정받을 수 있도록 해야 한다. 그리고 그 결과가 세계 언론 및 유명 포탈 사이트에 적극적으로 반영될 수 있도록 함으로써, DMZ가 평화와 생명이 숨 쉬는 새로운 공간으로 자리매김 될 수 있도록 노력해야 한다.
