The study on the U-am(尤庵) Song Si-yeol(宋時烈 1607-1689) is the core of the study on the latter term of Chosun dynasty. The study of U-am ranges from the 17th century to today, covering the study of history of Korean thought and overall Korean politics. The biggest problem regarding the study of U-am is in line with very different judgment on U-am depending on the various perspectives of U-am researchers. According to U-am researchers, the latter term of Chosun dynasty has been viewed either as the process of ruin or reconstruction after Japan's invasion(Imjin Hideyoshi Invasion: 1592-1597) and Chung's invasion(1627, 1636).
So, it is necessary that U-am study needs to be viewed, with a broader perspective, on the context of history of Korean thought and Korean politics. Also, the most urgent and important task of U-am study today is as follows: First, continuous effort on translation of U-am related primary source is called for. Second, research on people or study line related to U-am is necessary. Third, research on U-am in perspective of world history is needed. Fourth, the most important task of all is that the study of U-am should be future-oriented. Especially, U-am's thought and scholarship is worth being studied in connection with these day‘s issues of international order in Northeast Asia. The core point in the study of U-am in the 21th century is nation's ethic and subjectivity and international peace which are included in his respecting to Chu Hsi(朱子) or Confucian way of 理). We should manifest U-am's thought more specifically to make it a cornerstone for fair and peaceful international order in Northeast Asia.

尤庵宋時烈(1607-1689)에 관한 연구는 조선 후기사 연구의 핵심이라고 할 수 있다. 우암학은 17세기 이후 지금까지 한국사상사 및 정치사 전반을 포괄하는 연구 범위를 가진다. 우암학의 최대 문제는 연구자의 시각에 따라 우암 평가가 매우 다르며, 이에 대해 아직 정리되지 못한 쟁점이 산적하다는 점이다. 우암 연구는 조선 후기사를 망국의 과정으로 볼 것인가? 양란 이후의 국가 재건의 과정으로 볼 것인가? 등의 시각 차이에 따라 연구 내용 및 자료 해석에 큰 차이를 보인다. 따라서 우암학 연구에 관한 향후의 과제 이러한 문제 해결 과정이 중요한 주제들이 되어야 하며, 한국사상사 및 정치사의 맥락에서 통시적이며 거시적인 조망이 필요하다. 또한, 현재 가장 시급하고 중요한 우암학의 과제를 몇 가지 들어보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우암관련 1차 자료의 지속적인 번역 작업이 필요하다. 둘째, 우암과 관련된 인물이나 학맥과 관련된 연구도 아직 많은 연구가 필요하다. 셋째, 우암학을 조선내의 연구 범위로 국한하지 말고 세계사적인 시각에서 검토하는 연구가 필요하다. 넷째, 무엇보다 중요한 우암학 연구의 과제는 미래지향적인 우암학 연구이다. 특히 우암의 학문과 사상은 오늘날의 동북아시아 국제질서의 시대적 문제 의식과 연관지어 생각할 가치가 있다. 21세기에 주목해야할 우암학의 핵심은 朱子學尊崇이나 春秋義理論에 담긴 국가의 도덕과 주체성, 국제평화의 상생 원리이며, 이러한 사상을 보다 구체적으로 드러내어 밝히고 정당하고 평화로운 동북아 국제질서를 제안하는 바탕으로 삼아야 한다.
