Louis Kahn used the diverse drawing types to develop his ideas by his multi-sensible experiences and inspirations. Many of them were sketches and freehand design drawings. His drawings seemed to be the key in the process to solve the problems of special form and to make clear the relation of dimensions. His drawings show the evidence to indicate several important patterns in the design. His sketch works play an important silhouette role in the process of presenting the idea of freehand design drawings and are shown the visual figure through the black-and-white contrast. His sketches and freehand design drawings are shown geometric orders. The process of relations to be made various sketch and freehand design drawing types are shown the mutual relation between sketches and the freehand design drawings to be seem similar with essences and be in rapport with conforming the progress of projects.

루이스 칸의 스케치 작업에 대한 분석을 통하여 드로잉 과정에 의한 디자인 사고의 전환 내지는 변형 방법에 주목할 수 있다. 다른 유사한 논문들이 디자인 방법이나 기법에 중점을 둔 반면 이 논문은 개념적 차원에서 스케치 작업과 디자인 드로잉과의 관계를 살펴보고자 한다. 즉 디자인을 어떻게 하는가보다 왜하는가에 중점을 두고 있다. 디자이너와 건축가들이 독특한 드로잉, 드로잉 양식, 그리고 드로잉의 이용이 어떻게 창조력을 만들어내고 전개되어 형태적 사고에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 상관성을 밝혀보는 것은 매우 필요하다. 이런 점에서 본 논문은 루이스 칸의 건축 계획안을 위한 임시작업을 목적으로 이용되는 스케치 작업과 그 과정에서 만들어지는 프리핸드 드로잉에 역점을 두었으며, 그가 건축디자인의 개념과 형태를 해결하고 연구하기 위해 이용한 스케치 드로잉을 중심으로 분석하였다. 그의 스케치 작업이 현재 환경이나 디자인을 표현하기 위한 것이든 아니면 시각적 사고를 형성하기 위한 것이든 간에 그의 스케치 작업은 계획과 표현, 디자인의 가상세계로 유도하므로 그의 스케치작업과 디자인드로잉과의 상관관계를 분석하고자 한다.
