How to Classify Translation Studies?
초록
영어
What are some of the popular subjects among Korean researchers with respect to translation? What are unique characteristics involving Korea's Translation Studies? This paper is a preliminary study to answer those questions and aims to explore the ways on how to classify researches of Translation Studies. This paper consists of the following three parts: In the first part, three scholars who suggested frameworks for classifying Translation Studies are selected, and their classification methods are reviewed. To be specific, significance and limitations of Holmes/Toury map, which was first developed by Holmes and improved by Toury, are examined. Then, this paper examines four types of translation discourses, i.e., prescriptive/normative Translation Studies(TS), descriptive TS, inductive/scientific TS, and productive TS, proposed by Ladmiral, a French philosopher of translation. Lastly, twelve research areas of TS proposed by Williams and Chesterman are reviewed. The second part classifies a total of 193 papers published in the Interpreting and Translation Studies, an academic magazine dedicated to Translation Studies, from the first issue through 2010 issues, according to the above twelve research areas of Williams & Chesterman. The last part of this paper analyzes the classification results, and presents ways to complement the above-mentioned classification frameworks, along with their implications.
