This study aims to evaluate John Rawls' theory of justice from the theological standpoint of Arthur Rich. John Rawls regards justice as a necessary virtue of society and presents principles of justice, namely the principle of equal liberty, the difference principle, and the principle of fair equality of opportunity. He emphasizes the priority of the principle of equal liberty to the difference principle and the principle of fair equality of opportunity. For the most part Arthur Rich agrees with Rawls' theory of justice, because it satisfies his criterion of neighborhood and participation. Nevertheless he feels it is lacking because it does not gratify his criterion of relationality. He thinks that Rawls does not consider this criterion by persisting in the priority of the principle of equal liberty to the difference principle and the principle of fair equality of opportunity, namely the priority of liberty to equality. This article prefers Rawls' opinion to Rich's criticism, because the latter concludes in an ideal eclecticism. When we actually constitute a society on the basis of liberty and equality, we can not consider these two values equally. In this case we can not help considering one more than the other. Therefore Rawls' position outdoes that of Rich in a realizable possibility.
