Let us review the concepts of competence, character and committment as introduced in Dr. Young Woo Kim's (Assistant Secretary, US National Disability Committee) book, "Challenge and Opportunity". The type of people that American society is said to demand are talented, sophisticated and dedicated. This is an issue that the Korean church as a faith community needs to also deeply consider. The fact that the Korean church has a century old history is immaterial; more importantly we must ask what the 21st century Christian church is teaching and showing to Koreans. Before we talk about our church history or business, we must first ask what efforts are being made to promote the repentance movement to move people's hearts. Despite the growth in size of the church, the influence of Christianity in society is minimal because people's lifestyles are different outside the church. The Korean church faces numerous problems, such as over-emphasis on outward growth, disinterest in God's word, value and cultural gaps between minister and congregation, public scandals caused by immoral and unethical ministers and congregation members, deep denominational divisions, diffusion of religious cults, absence of applying the message of love, production of incompetent leaders, over-emphasis on offering collections, the issue of ministerial succession in large scale churches, disputes concerning church property and assets, etc., all of which have caused Christianity to lose its original meaning. Due to these issues and phenomena, the Korean church has lost much public confidence and respect and today Christianity and our church is looked upon with disappointment and negativity. Unable to provide the true meaning of life, the Korean church has only pursued expansion rather than pursuit of the truth and, as a result, its growth stalled in the early 1990s and has been in decline since the late 1990s. We must realize that the proper care and nurturing of the congregation by the church is the future of Korean society. In order for proper care and nurturing to take place, the Korean church as a faith community must correct the understanding and subject of leadership, the content and method of teaching and adopt Comenius' lifelong learning system and before we develop believers, we must first nurture sound and honest human beings. The Korean church as a faith community must not focus solely on church life, but train people to apply their faith in everyday life. The myopic focus of the Korean church on expansion and disregard of the development of faith in everyday life has caused a mass production of churches and members indifferent to social life. The result is the influence of Christianity on individual social lives today are insignificant at best.

김영우 박사(미국 국가장애위원회 정책차관보)의 『도전과 기회』라는 책에서 소개된 Competence(실력), Character(인격), 그리고 Commitment(헌신)의 강조를 되새겨 보자! 미국사회가 요구하는 사람은 실력 있고 고상한 인격을 가지고 헌신하는 사람이라고 한다. 한국교회가 돌봄과 양육 공동체로 어떻게 무엇을 해야 할지 깊이 생각하게 하는 문제이다. 교회 역사가 100년 이상 된 것이 중요한 것이 아니고, 21세기의 기독교회가 과연 한국과 한국인에게 무엇을 가르치고 있고, 무엇을 보여주고 있는가? 우리 기독교가 교회 역사나 사업을 말하기 전에 인간의 마음을 바꾸는 회개운동에 얼마나 최선을 다하고 있는가를 반문해보자. 교회 밖과 교회 안의 생활이 다르기 때문에 양적성장에도 불구하고 기독교의 영향력은 미미하다. 이러한 한국교회의 현상으로 말씀엔 관심이 없는 외형적인 성장에만 주력, 목회자와 신자의 가치관의 문제, 목회자와 신자의 부도덕한 모습과 비윤리적인 모습으로 인한 사회적 물의, 심한 교파 분열, 사이비 신앙의 만연, 사랑의 실천 부족, 수많은 저질 성직자 배출, 지나친 헌금 강요, 대형교회의 목회자 세습 문제, 재산권 분쟁 등으로 기독교 본래의 뜻을 잃어버렸다. 이러한 현상으로 한국교회는 사회적 공신력과 신뢰감을 상실했고, 우리 기독교와 교회는 우리사회에 실망을 안겨주고 부정적인 시각을 심어주었다. 한국교회는 진정한 삶의 의미를 제공하지 못한 채 진리 추구보다는 교세확장에만 관심가진 결과 한국교회의 성장은 1990년대 초 정체 그리고 1990년대 말부터 쇠퇴하고 있는 것이다. 교인들을 위한 한국교회의 바른 돌봄과 양육이 한국사회의 미래임을 자각해야 한다. 바른 돌봄과 양육을 위해 한국교회 양육공동체는 리더십, 대상에 대한 이해, 가르칠 내용, 방법 을 바르게 정립하고 평생교육 체제를 코메니우스에게 배워 신자이기 전에 온전하고 정직한 사람으로 세워야 한다. 한국교회의 양육하는 공동체는 21세기 한국교회를 위해 교회생활만을 가르치는 것에 주력하는 것이 아니라, 생활신앙 훈련도 가르쳐야 한다. 생활신앙 훈련을 등한시 한 상태에서 교세확장에 치중하다보니 사회생활과 무관한 교회와 교인들을 양산하게 됐기 때문에, 개인들의 사회생활에 끼치는 기독교의 영향력은 미미하기 그지없는 것이다.
