In January of 2010, the São Paulo City Hall designated the district of Bom Retiro, which is located in the upper side of the center of the city of São Paulo, as Korea Town. With this, the status of Korean immigrants in Brazil was recognized officially by the Brazilian society, after almost fifty years’ sufferings and efforts in the process of adaptation to the Brazilian society, as well as contributions to the Brazilian female garment industry. At the end of 20th century, the Korean community of Brazil has appeared as the most “exemplar” immigrants’ group in Brasil, with their sincerity and passion to their work. The Korean community in Brazil occupies only 0.03% of the total Brazilian population 190,000,000, which means that whose member has never surpassed 50,000 during this long period. The majority of Korean community in Brazil is concentrated in the city of São Paulo(98%), and 60% of which is working in the female garments production related area in the districts of Bom Retiro and Brás. The Brazilian civil government, which has been established in 1986, with the market opening policy in 1990 and the Real Plan in 1994, made the Korean immigrants to live permanently in Brasil after gaining the economic stability, instead of re- emigration to the Uniated States of America. As its’ consequent effects, Bom Retiro has become to be served as also the residential area for Korean immigrants, which had further provoked a lot of changes not only in the Koreans' life style, but also in maintaining strategy for their female garment’s business. Moreover, the initial Korean wave through cable TV programs, which had been started in commemoration of the 50 years’ Korea-Brazil diplomatic relation in 2009, is contributing to the firm formation of Korean identity as well as the formation of pro-Korea community in the Brazilian society, which has showed long cultural distance to the Korea.

2010년 1월 상파울루 시청은 상파울루 시내중심부에서 약간 북쪽에 위치한 봉헤찌로 (Bom Retiro)區를 한인타운(Korea Town)으로 지정하였다. 이곳은 재브라질 한인사회 의 생활터전으로, 브라질 사회가 이민 역사 약 50년 만에 재브라질 한인사회를 공식적으로 인정한 것이었다. 오늘날 재브라질 한인들은 98%가 도시 상파울루에서 모여 살며, 그 중 60%가 봉헤찌 로나 브라스에서 여성의류 생산업인 “제품”에 종사하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 다음의 주제들 ― 첫째: 1963년 2월 12일 브라질 산토스항에 도착한, 대한민국 최초의 공식이민 이었던 한국 농업이민자들이 도시 상파울루로 이주한 배경과, 또한 도시에서 “제품”이라 는 여성의류 제조업 선택배경, 둘째: 지난 30년 동안 한인들의 경제활동의 중심지였던 봉헤찌로가 민정이후 실시된 일련의 경제적 조치들 ― 1990년 브라질 시장개방과 1994년 헤알개혁(Plano Real) ― 이후 주거지역을 겸하게 되면서 그것이 한인들의 일상생활과 경 제활동에 미치는 영향력과 그 시너지 효과들, 셋째: 이미 닦아놓은 경제적 기반을 유지해 나가기 위한 재브라질 한인사회의 전략 변화들, 넷째: “잃어버린 10년”이라고 명명된 브 라질 경제침체기 한국인들의 미국으로의 재이주와 1999년 초 IMF위기로 촉발된 한국으 로의 역이민이 오늘날 여성의류업을 중심으로 한 “봉헤찌로-로스엔젤레스-서울”이라는 한인들의 초국가적 네트워크 형성배경과 그것의 작동 시스템, 다섯째: 그들의 한국과의 관계와 한국 정체성 유지 방법 즉 한국문화 유지노력과 그리고 후손들에 대한 한국어 교육에 어떠한 노력을 하는지 그리고 여기에 이제 막 시작한 한류가 끼치는 영향 ― 을 중심으로 재브라질 한인사회를 분석해 보았다.
