Death in Chinese has been expressed in a various forms through all times. Death in China was avoided mentioning in a direct way of expressions. People in China tried to find a indirect way to express death corresponding to different ages and positions. The viewpoints of death have been influenced by several thoughts in China as well as the thoughts of death and human being in Confucianism. This is the reason why death in China can have many various expressions in a indirect way. Most people in China nowadays have preferred to mention death figuratively and metaphorically instead of expressing it directly. This paper aims to show the expressions in Chinese and its diverse ways of how to mention about death, researching for the recorded documents as the basis of its expressions. This classifies many different ways of expressing death. This work can be divided into two parts, one in the relation with the different designations of individual deaths and another associated with naming of death in general. Designations of individual deaths can be expressed in a various form due to social positions and ages. Some expressions are influenced by the different ways of how to die. Naming of death in general also can be differently expressed due to the nature and framework of society. Euphemistic ways of expressing in Chinese are general rather than direct ways. This euphemism is not only used for the expressions of death, but also presented in most parts of social lives. One reason for this can be the typical thoughts of chinese, particularly correlated with confucianism.

중국어에서 ‘死’의 표현은 고금을 막론하고 다양하게 표현되어지고 있다. 그것의 과거 표현 은 시대와 환경 요인에 따라 사회 신분계층간의 다른 표현과 나이와 관련하여 죽음에 관련된 직접적인 표현을 회피하기 위한 것이기도 하였다. 그것은 유교적인 것에서 비롯된 것이기도 하였으니, 우리에게는 중국인 사상 등의 이해에 도움이 될 것으로 여긴다. 현재는 죽음의 비유적인 표현을 써서 직접적인 표현을 대신한 것이 주류를 이룬다. 이러한 중국인의 표현은 고금을 막론하고 죽음에 대한 표현으로 직접적인 표현 보다는 그것을 달리 표현한 것으로 죽음을 나타내려고 하였다. 여기에서는 고래에 어떻게 죽음을 표현했는지 그 근거인 문헌들을 통해 밝히고자 하였다. 이에 대한 내용으로 개별적인 죽음에 대한 별칭, 사회 신분계급과 나이에 따라 다른 표현, 그 리고 죽음의 방식과 형태에 따라 나타난 것과 형벌로 나타나는 죽음에 대한 언어 표현을, 그 리고 일반적인 죽음의 별칭은 적응성이 강하기 때문에 사회의 분포 범위가 비교적 넓은 사람 의 죽음에 대한 별칭의 의미를 알아보아 중국인의 다양한 죽음에 대한 표현을 구분하고자 하 였다. 중국의 유교적 관습에서 비롯된 생활습관 등으로 죽음의 직접적 표현 보다는 완곡한 부드 러운 말을 통해 표현하는 것은 비단 죽음이라는 것뿐 아니라, 사회 전반적인 생활에서 사용되 어지는 언어에서 나타나고 있다.
