Pottery form is closely related with function, and therefore the assemblage of vessel forms is a product of the livelihood of the social group reflected. In addition, because the assemblage of vessel forms is different over time and according to region, we can gain access to the context of regional interaction through a comparison of these differences. Research carried out on the wooden chamber tomb phase and stone chamber tomb phase illustrates that vessel form assemblages were already established in the wooden chamber tomb phase. In the stone chamber tomb phase, four different assemblages were established in four different regions. Social groups differ from one another and vessel form composition comes about through the continuation of tradition or the adoption of new favorite forms. It therefore appears that these spheres were formed around the period of transition from the wooden chamber tomb phase to the stone chamber tomb phase, as regional interaction became frequent. This may suggest that the social groups of this time were not systematically organized by elite groups but each maintained their own way of life.

토기의 기종은 기능과 밀접한 관계를 가지며, 기종조합은 당시 사회집단의 생활상이 반영된 산물이다. 그와 함께 기종의 조합은 시대와 지역에 따라 서로 다른 유형을 보이고 있으므로, 그 차이를 비교검토 함으로써 지역간 교류양상에 접근할 수 있다. 먼저 낙동강 상류지역의 목곽ㆍ석곽묘 단계별 검토를 한 결과, 목곽묘 단계에 이미 그 사회집단의 독자적인 기종조합이 성립되었다. 그리고 석곽묘단계의 각 유적별 기종에 대한 구성과 출토빈도, 구성비율을 검토한 결과, 4개의 기종조합 분포권역으로 구분되었다. 기종구성은 사회집단에 따라 전통성을 유지하거나 선호하는 기종을 새롭게 채택하는 양상으로 구분되었다. 따라서 기종 분포권은 목곽묘에서 석곽묘 단계로 이행하는 중에 지역간 교류가 빈번해지면서 형성된 것으로 보인다. 사회집단들은 엘리트 사회집단을 중심으로 체계적이며, 긴밀한 조직적인 네트워크를 형성하지 않고, 각각 독자적인 생활방식을 영위했던 것으로 보여진다.
