The traditional medicine tourism has a huge effect of economies of scale. The other countries including China, Singapore, Thailand have actively nurtured the traditional medicine tourism into a new growth engine for economic development by creating basic conditions where the each nation's traditional medicine can be marketed with the wave of globalization. The traditional medicine through the efforts of nations attempting to create new market to attract overseas patients has been rapidly changed as a part of prospective fields of trade. However, we have difficulties in entering the global market because of the lack of the public and private concerns on health tourism. So, The Korean traditional medicine system must be reformed to attract health tourists from abroad. In this respect, this study aimes to provide the alternatives on the development of the Korean traditional medicine through basic understanding of health tourism.

서양의료의 한계로 인해 전통의료를 보완대체의료로 인정하려는 제도적 움직임이 확산되고 있어 전통의료개발이 세계의 주된 관심의 대상이 되고 있으며, 여기에 경제성장으로 인한 삶의 질의 변화로 인해 여행이 보편화되면서 전통의료와 여행을 접목시킨 목적형관광이 새로운 유형의 관광유형으로 대두되고 있다. 풍부한 전통의료를 보존 ․ 계승 ․ 발전시키고 있는 국가들은 민 ․ 관차원에서 의료를 관광과 연계하여 고부가가치를 창출하기 위한 전략수립에 진력하고 있다. 하지만, 우리나라는 아직 제도적 차원
에서 전통의료를 관광상품화 하려는 노력이 부족하고, 의료관광에 대한 인식이 낮다. 다행히 최근, 정부는 ‘한의약육성발전계획’ 등을 통해 전통의학의 과학화 ․ 세계화를 달성하려는 노력을 보임으로써 늦게나마 의료관광산업에 관심을 나타내고 있다. 그러나 아직은 경쟁국에 비해 의료관광에 대한 인식이 부족하고 활성화 방안이 구체화되어 있지 못하여 신의료시장 개척에 능동적이지 못하다. 그러므로 문헌고찰, 선행연구 등에 의해 작성된 본 연구를 통해 전통의료관광산업을 활성화하는데 장애가 되고 있는 요소들, 즉 의료관련법의 개정, 그리고 민 ․ 관의 협력체계 구축 등에 관한 방안을 제시하였다.
