I may not deny that it is obviously metalanguage as far as novel text in itself is a construct by a language and a dicourse. However Oe Kenzaburo is writing a novel by making up not the embodiment of the idea caused by the observation of the social phenomenon in the conceptual stage of the novel but the metalanguage, in a word, "ideal the one", and applying it to "scene for which the reality is suitable". Meanwhile, he shows excessively self-conscious attitude and approach to his story began with a meta-language. As a result, the linguistic metalevel-like foundation he's using is exposed. The novel of such Oe can say to the world of the metafiction. This paper took up the series of 'rain tree'-"Women who listen to 'Rain Tree'"(1982)-and considered the thought of the meta level of Oe and self-contradiction by it through 'rain tree'. I analyzed a metaphor 'rain tree' from the function theory-like point of view which makes the difference and the observation of a metaphor, not the ontology-like point of view running after semantic contents opportunity. But I found out that a paradox of meta thought depends on intentional operation and is being connected with a turn of a novel after all.

소설 텍스트 자체가 언어 및 언설에 의한 구축물인 이상 메타언어임은 부정할 수 없을 것이다. 그런데 오에 겐자부로(大江健三郎)는 소설의 구상 단계에서 사회현상의 관찰에서 생긴 이념의 체현이 아니라, 메타언어, 즉 ‘관념적인 것’을 만들어내고, 그것을 ‘현실의 적합한 장면’에 끼워 맞추는 식으로 해서 소설을 써 왔다. 한편, 메타언어에서 시작된 자신의 소설에 대해, 특히 소설의 수법에 대해 과도하게 자의식적인 태도를 보이고 있으며, 구사하고 있는 언어의 메타레벨적 기반을 노출시키고 있다. 이러한 오에의 소설은 메타픽션의 세계라 할 수 있다. 본고는 연작집『‘레인트리’를 듣는 여자들(「雨の木」を聴く女たち)』(1982)을 중심으로 상기와 같은 오에의 메타레벨적 사고와 이것에 의한 자기모순을 메타포 ‘레인트리’를 통해 고찰한 것이다. 논자는 각 단편의 메타포의 의미내용을 쫒아가는 존재론적 관점이 아니라, 차이와 관찰을 계기로 하는 기능론적인 관점에서 메타포 ‘레인트리’를 분석했다. ‘레인트리’연작은 오에가 메타포를 소설 창작의 주요한 수법으로 채택하면서 그것이 표현의 방법이라는 레벨을 넘어 소설의 주제가 되어 가는 듯한 자기모순을 드러내고 있다. 그러나 메타사고의 패러독스는 작자의 의도적인 조작에 의한 것으로, 결국 그러한 모순은 소설의 방향전환과 연동되어감을 확인할 수 있다
