In the context of globalization and the need of international competition which Japanese universities are now facing, this paper tries to argue the problems of education and research in an international university in terms of the question of identity‐formation of both students and instructors. These topics of education and research in a multi‐cultural environment give rise to the problem that cannot be solved by the simple translation of existing methods of education. This paper will focus on two inter‐disciplinary fields such as Southeast Asian Studies and Gender Studies, where Japanese instructors teach the issue on Southeast Asia to the students who are from Southeast Asia and a Japanese female instructor teaches the topics on gender in English to male students from European countries. It can be said that these practices lead to question that which is thought as self‐evident.

本稿は、大学の国際競争力の強化が迫られる日本の高等教育の現場にあって、国際大学の多文化環境における研究と教育がもたらす諸問題を学生と教員の双方のアイデンティティ形成にからめながら論じようとするものである。多文化環境における教育は、これまでの教育の方法のたんなる翻訳では解決できない問題をはらんでいる。とりあげるのは、いずれも学際的な研究分野である東南アジア研究とジェンダー論の教育である。そこでは、日本人教員が東南アジア出身の学生に東南アジアについて教育をおこない、日本人の女性教員がジェンダーについてヨーロッパ出身の男子学生に母語ではない英語で教えるということが起きる。これらの実践では、対象であると思っていたことがらが、いつのまにか主体に作用していたことを思い知らされるきっかけを与え、自明であったものごとをあらためて問いなおす契機となるのである。
