Program planning is a critical activity in the field of adult education. This article proposes a viewpoint on program planning practice that takes social relations as central to planning programs and asks what adult educators can do to plan from the relational perspective. Although there are number of studies in the literature investigating various theories of program planning and using those theories as conceptual frameworks, little is known about the relational perspectives of program planning. This study explores the central concepts on which the study is based: What is meant by relational perspective? What is relational program planning? Why is relational program planning important? Future empirical research could further test the adequacy of this study for a better understanding of the concept.

본 연구에서는 성인교육 프로그램 개발 활동을 탐색하는 데 있어 관계론적 관점이라 는 새로운 이론적 틀을 제시하여 프로그램 개발의 이론적 논의를 확대하고자 한다. 지 금까지 프로그램 개발과 관련하여 적지 않은 연구가 있어 왔지만 최근 10여 년 동안 별다른 이론적 발전을 이루지는 못했던 것으로 파악된다. 프로그램 개발과 관련된 연 구는 주로 기존의 이론과 모델을 ‘이론적 틀’로써 적용하는 수준에 그치고 있으며, 프로 그램 개발 이론 및 모델 자체에 관한 새로운 연구 활동이 활발하지 못하다는 것이다. 이 글에서는 우선 사회학에서 논의되고 있는 관계론적 관점의 개념과 경험연구를 소개 하고 성인교육 프로그램 이론적 동향을 논의한 후 관계론적 프로그램 개발과 중요성, 그리고 향후 연구 발전 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구에서 프로그램 개발 활동이 사 회적 활동이라는 의미는 단지 프로그램을 개발하는 데 있어 사회적 맥락을 고려해야한 다는 기존의 논의를 넘어, 모든 프로그램 개발 활동은 사회적으로 배태(embedded)되 어 있고, 복수의 개인들의 다양한 상호작용이 프로그램 개발에 영향을 미친다는 관계론적 관점(relational perspective)에서 프로그램 개발을 이해해야 한다는 것이다.
