Metaphor is a puzzling subject in the philosophy of language. The literal meaning of most metaphoric expressions are false or simply meaningless. Therefore, it is very important to discuss how we can communicate with metaphoric expressions. some philosophers in recent studies argue that metaphor has nothing to do with meaning. They claim, instead, we should focus our attention on the use of expression for the proper understanding of metaphor. Donald Davidson and John Searle are two of those who suggest to see the problem of metaphor that way. I will discuss each of these positions and see how any possible alternative ideas can be developed.

언어철학의 중심 주제인 의미를 다루는 데 있어서 은유는 어려운 문제를 제기한다. 은유적 표현은 축어적 의미(literal meaning)대로 이해할 때 거짓인 (혹은 무의미한) 문장이 된다. 따라서 은유적 표현이 어떻게 소통 가능한가의 문제를 철학적으로 다루는 것은 매우 중요한 일이다. 최근 언어철학에서 은유는 의미의 문제가 아니라 사용의 문제라는 주장들이 다양하게 전개되면서 새로운 국면을 맞이하게 되었다. 이 논문은 은유를 논의함에 있어서 사용의 문제에 초점을 맞춘 대표적인 연구가들인 데이빗슨(Donald Davidson)과 써얼(John Searle)의 입장과 문제점에 대해서 중점적으로 살펴보고, 이들의 입장이 가진 문제점들을 극복할 수 있는 가능한 대안이 어떠한 모습을 보일 수 있는가에 대해 간략히 검토해 볼 것이다.
