This paper is an attempt to investigate essence and meaning of dance, based on Martin Heidegger's theory of art, which I call the theory of truth-construction. The creation of art works is to set up truth into them, and the appreciation of them is to comprehend it. If a work of dance is to be a work of art, it must represent truth, which will be realized.
Dance has two structures, surface structure and deep one. The surface structure is composed of various forms of movement, and the deep world and truth, which will be understood in the imaginative projection. Moving toward the truth happening in works of dance, we apprehend the meaning of our own lives.

이 글은 하이데거의 예술론에 바탕을 두고 무용의 본질과 의미를 탐구하려는 목적을 가지고 있다.
하이데거의 예술론은 진리 구축설이다. 예술 창작은 작품에 진리를 설립하는 것이고, 예술 감상은 작품에 설립된 진리를 깨닫는 활동이다. 무용이 예술로서 존재하려면 작품에서 세계와 진리가 표출되어야 하며, 그리고 보호되어야 한다.
무용은 표층 구조와 심층 구조를 가지고 있다. 표층 구조는 동작의 연결이며, 심층구조는 표층 구조를 발판으로 감상자가 상상적 투사를 통하여 깨달을 수 있는 세계와 진리이다. 무용 작품의 심층구조에 대한 접근을 통하여 감상자는 자신의 존재와 인간의 삶의 뿌리를 새롭게 의식하게 된다.
