Skepticism doubts the possibility of knowledge of external world. In modern times, ever since Descartes attempted to respond to Montaigne's skepticism, many epistemologists have criticized and disputed the validity of skepticism. Recently, S. Cavell has deemed all these previous responses to skepticism as wrong attempts, and has dealt with skepticism not merely as a theoretical question but as a deeper issue. Cavell tries to view 'the truth of skepticism' or 'the moral of skepticism', from the perspective of the conditions of the humanity, or human finitude. This paper compares S. Cavell's conception of skepticism to that of other modern philosophers, including B. Stroud and R. Rorty. The value of the question of skepticism is not limited to its being an instrument of philosophy, and its range of influence surpasses the bounds of philosophy. Since Descartes' narrow focus on the certainty, the project of epistemology has been wrongly oriented. The truth of skepticism is that the world's presence is not the function of the knowing, but the problem of acknowledgement. According to S. Cavell, unappeasable craving surrounds skepticism, and such an urge of the skepticism is inevitable in the thoughts and languages of the mankind. Breaking the human finitude being the essence of men's illusion, it is wrong to deem the skepticism as a 'disease' subject to cure. In the same manner, the previous attempts of the traditional epistemology to consider the conditions of humanity as an intellectual lack and to convert it to puzzles to be solved must be abandoned. The ultimate goal of this paper is to further validate S. Cavell's arguments, that the relation between the world and the mankind is not based on 'knowing', and enlarge the moral dimension of his arguments. Cavell's argument that the world is to be accepted and presentness of other minds is to be acknowledged is supported by analysis of Shakespearean tragedies and of Hollywood's comedies. The essence of Cavell's arguments show that pursuing certainty leads us to failures and tragedies, and urge us to accept the human finitude and acknowledge the world, other minds, as well as our self-identities. In the end, Cavell's argument ― that it is not additional knowledge that is required but ways of life such as recognition, acceptance, and trust, that can form and transform human relationships ― enables us to understand the moral implications the issue of skepticism entail.
