The aim of this article is to examine the philosophical discussions in Korean under the head of ‘jonjaeron (ontology)’. Whether the so-called ‘jonjaeronjok (ontological)’ discourse would be a meaningful philosophical work ― this is the main question of this article. My answer to this rather provocative question is negative. Nevertheless I would not say “no” to the possibility of a Korean ontology. One could, I think, go ahead with a Korean ontology, just with several qualifications. The reason why the Korean ontological discourse could not be a meaningful philosophical work is as follows: In the Indo-European predicative sentence philosophically significant is the verb ‘to be (sein/ einai)’. It occurs in the same form in every sentence. But its meanings are different from one another. Hence the philosophic discipline of ontology which, according to Aristotle’s definition, investigates the diversity of the meanings could not have nothing to do with the language. But there is no be-verb in Korean. Therefore in Korean there is nothing to raise an ontological question. In a word, pursuing philosophy in accordance with the Korean semantics the so-called ontological question cannot be raised meaningfully. The greater part of the Korean ontological discourse is therefore empty. It looks like doing something serious, but deals with nothing.

이 글의 목표는 ‘존재론’이라는 표제 아래 진행되는 철학적 논구를 근본적으로 되짚어보는 것이다. 이른바 ‘존재론’ 논의가 우리에게도 유의미한 철학적 작업이냐는 것이 이 글의 주된 물음이다. 다소 도발적인 이 물음에 이 글의 대답은 부정적이다. 그렇다고 해서 존재론의 가능성을 근본적으로 부정하느냐 하면 그렇지는 않다. 일정한 조건하에 가능할 수도 있다는 입장이다. 한국어로 진행되는 ‘존재론’ 논의가 유의미한 철학적 작업일 수 없는 이유는 대체로 이렇다: 서구어로 된 서술문에서 중요한 역할을 하는 단어는 ‘be (그리스어 einai)’ 동사인데, 형태상으로는 각 문장에서 동일하지만 그 의미는 동일하지 않다. ‘존재론’은 바로 그 다의성을 탐구하는 철학의 분과이기에 언어와 무관하게 진행될 수 없다. 그러나 한국어에는 be 동사 역할을 하는 문장 구성요소가 없다. 따라서 한국어에는 의미론적으로 ‘존재’ 문제를 일으킬만한 소지가 아예 없다. 요컨대 한국어의 논리를 좇아 철학하게 되면 이른바 ‘존재’ 문제 같은 것은 유의미하게 제기되지 않는다. 이 땅에서 한국어로 생산되는 거의 모든 ‘존재론’ 논의는 허공에 떠있는, 뭔가 심오한 것을 다루는 것 같지만 실은 아무것도 다루는 게 없는 가짜 담론, 속 빈 강정이다.
