Feng Shui designates the methodology that helps to decide adequate place for building a house, settling a grave and so on. This theory, based on the notion of the life force, systematizes the thought that the good or ill luck is connected with the geomantic topography of the situation and the shape of the land by quoting the principle of the ancient astronomy, the study of calendar, the cosmic dual forces and the Five Elements. On the other hand, some people have complained that Feng Shui not only stretches the lies but also mentions the human matters or the good or ill luck. In fact, the overinterpretation in the notion of the cosmic dual forces and the one-sided application in the logic of response are inadequate parts to make a study. However, if understanding exactly the core of problem, there would be no objection to the theory of Feng Shui that it explains the inherent wisdom of harmony of human and nature. Furthermore, a view like this coincides with the basic concept and the fundamental principle in ecological gardening and ecological architecture.

風水는 氣 개념을 바탕으로 하여 고대의 天文學과 曆學, 그리고 陰陽五行의 원리를 다양하게 원용하여, 땅의 모양과 형세에 따라 길흉화복이 연관되어 있다는 사고를 체계화하고 있다. 그러나 風水는 실험을 통해 반증될 가능성을 애초에 차단함으로써 유사과학을 넘어서 형이상학에까지 이르게 되었으며, 그로 인해 왜곡되거나 신비화하는 경향마저 띠게 되었다고 비판하는 시각도 있다. 이와 같은 부정적인 견해의 초점은 風水가 비합리적이며 비과학적이라는데 있다. 비합리적이라는 측면은 사실이 아닌 부분을 확대해석하여 人事, 吉凶에까지 언급하는 술수라는 것이며, 비과학적이라 비판하는 측면에서는 잘못된 지식에 근거한 억측이라고 표현한다. 사실 風水는 陰陽 개념의 확대 해석에서부터 感應 논리의 일방적인 적용으로 人事 災異의 문제에서부터 發福에 이르기까지 다양한 부분을 망라하고 있지만, 이는 오히려 風水를 연구의 대상으로 삼기에는 부적절함을 의미하는 것으로 인식되고 있다. 비단 이와 같은 사실만이 風水 이론을 정립하는 핵심적인 요소는 아니지만, 風水에 내재된 문제의 핵심을 올바르게 이해한다면 風水가 자연과 인간의 조화라는 근원적인 지혜를 정립한 것이라는 데는 이견이 있을 수 없다. 뿐만 아니라 바로 이와 같은 관점이 현대의 생태적 조경이나 생태 건축학 등의 기본 방향 및 원칙과도 부합되는 내용이기도 하다.
