This paper aims at revealing the meaning of saṅkhāra-cessation (saṅkhāranirodha/saṅkhārasa -matha). First it shows the reason why saṅkhāra needs to be ceased. The reason is that saṅkhāra works on the basis of ignorance (avijjā) and lets common people transmigrate. The meaning of saṅkhāra-cessation is explored in terms of two dimensions: ceasing saṅkhāra as an intention (cetanā) and ceasing saṅkhāra as an action (kamma). Ceasing saṅkhāra as a intention does not mean ceasing all saṅkhāras or saṅkhāras themselves. It means to cease greed, addiction, or craving that is accompanied with the six external worlds or intentions towards them. Similarly ceasing saṅkhāra as an action, which is revealed in examining the notion of ceasing perception and sensation, does not mean to cease saṅkhāras themselves. It means to cease defilements or greed-hatred-confusion. We can address this meaning of saṅkhāra-cessation revealed in these two dimensions; saṅkhāra based on ignorance should be ceased but saṅkhāra being freed from ignorance is needed until one enters nibbāna without residue remaining. This paper suggests one thing with regard to nibbāna and saṅkhāra-cessation: the 1st jhāna is the necessary condition for nibbāna and saṅkhāra-cessation, and other jhānas may not be.

이 글은 불교수행의 목표이기도 하면서 열반에 필수적인 ‘행의 그침(saṅkhāranirodha/saṅk hārasamatha)’의 의미에 대한 탐구이다. 먼저 행의 그침이 필수적으로 요구되는 이유를 밝힌다. 그 이유는 행의 작용이 무명(avijjā)에 의한 것으로서 중생을 윤회토록하기 때문이다. 행 그침의 의미는 ‘의도(cetanā)로서의 행의 그침’과 ‘업/행위(kamma)로서의 행의 그침’이라는 두 차원에서 해명된다. 의도로서의 행의 그침은 모든 행 혹은 행 자체의 그침을 의미하지 않고, 육경(六境)/현상에 수반되거나 육경을 향한 의도에 수반되는 탐욕, 즐김, 갈애 등의 그침을 의미한다. 신구의 업/행위로서의 행의 그침은 상수멸정(saññāvedayitanirodha/想受滅定)에 이르는 선정과정을 중심으로 검토되는데, 여기서도 행 그침은 행 자체의 지멸을 의미하는 것이 아니라 번뇌/탐진치 지멸을 의미한다. 두 차원에서 밝혀진 행 그침의 이러한 의미는 무명의 작용으로서의 행은 그침의 대상이지만, 무명을 벗어난 행은 무여열반에 들 때까지 요구되어진다는 것을 의미한다.
