초록

영어

Plato was deeply affected from Orphic-Pythagoreans psychology. According to their theory, soul had originally divine nature. But it faces the crisis of loosing its divinity because of incarnation. Therefore the purpose of man's life becomes the purification of the soul logically on the basis of the similarity with Idea.
Soul is opposed to body because of its own divine transcendence. Desire and emotion belong to the bodily element, on the contrary, the intellectual part is classified with the soul.
In Republic, Plato gives up this extreme dualism and tries to reconciliate soul and body. At last, he tripartites the soul. Contrast between soul and body is explained by the conflicts of tripartite elements. This is the development of Plato's psychology. When he divides the soul into three parts, namely, reason, spirit, desire, we can find the ground from the external cause of tripartite of the state and the internal cause of the psychological conflicts. However, in book , the argument of tripartition implies logical faults. Also threⅣ eparts extend their meaning in book Ⅷ, Ⅸ. Reason, desire, spirit are personified as a whole person. Then each parts are divided into three parts again and fall into regress.
Some scholars attempt to explain the parts into three tendencies or aspects owing to these problems.
Plato himself is frustrated with the relation between the whole soul and its parts. Simplicity and individuality of Idea in the earlier period are changed to the possibility of union in the later period. In Sophist, Being has motion and life The living life contains 'one' and 'many' at once. Therefore tripartite soul implies 'one' and 'many' together. Psyche, meaning 'power of life' originally, obtains the philosophical basis in Plato. In the tenth book of Republic, he insists the only rational part is immortal. In Timaeus like Republic, he also persists the tripartition and the immortality of the soul in the same context. Plato preserves the consistency in the developing process of the psychology from Phaedo to Timaeus.
