Wang Pi(A.D.226-A.D.249) assumes a critical attitude toward the school of Hsiang-Shu that emphasized the importance of images in I Ching and it was in full flourish at the Han era. Many scholars in that period was too exclusively riveted on the phenomenal world and the words or images of eight trigrams so that the priority of the meaning founded on images was neglected. They applied to the changes in the hexagrams if the trigram did not correspond to word, for examples Ch'ien is the horse and K'un is the cow. And in addition they applied the p'ang tung method, consisted in the co-ordination of hexagrams that are opposites in structure, and took the five states of chang, wu hsing, into account. Wang Pi reversed this atmosphere to go back to the essentials. He boldly disregarded the method of precedence and a series of studies of a general character putting the separate themes of the I Ching into the right perspective again. By means of the meaning he penetrated once more to the real sources of the book. His treatise on the images makes this clear. He said that images give the meaning and words make the images clear. To exhaust the meaning there is nothing better than the images, to exhaust the images there nothing better than the words. The words ought to concentrate on the images, then the right words for contemplating the images are found. The images ought to concentrate on the meaning, then the right images for contemplating the meaning are found. If the precept is to the effect that one should act forcefully, what need of the horse? If it is to the effect that one should be obedient, what need of the cow? If the individual lines correspond to obedience, what need of saying that K'un is the cow? And if the precept demands forceful action, what need of saying that Ch'ien is the horse? The meaning is exhausted by means of images. The images are exhausted by means of the words. It is like following a trail to catch a hare. once one has the hare, one forgets the trail. Or it is like putting out wicker traps to catch fish. Once one has the fish, one forgets the traps. Now, the words are the trails of the images, and the images are the traps of the meaning.

“뜻을 얻으면 象을 잊어라”는 왕필의 得意忘象論은 漢代 象數易에 대한 비판으로, 」周易略例」 ｢明象｣에 나오는 내용이다. 象은 「周易」의 특수한 용어로 ｢易經｣을 구성하는 卦와 辭의 필연적 연관성을 설명하기 위해 ｢십익｣에서 사용한 개념이다. ｢십익｣ 가운데 ｢설괘전｣에서는 특히 8괘 物象을 나열하고 있는데, 漢代 상수학자들은 이 8괘 物象을 ｢易經｣을 이해할 수 있는 주요한 수단으로 삼아 卦變·互體·半象 등의 새로운 이론을 만들어내고 이 외 曆法과 五行 등의 「주역」 외적 요인을 끌어왔다. 왕필은 상수학자들의 易해석은 오류라고 본다. 상수학자들처럼 8괘 物象 중심으로 ｢역경｣을 해석할 때, 象을 통해 드러내고자한 ｢역경｣의 본뜻은 놓치기 때문이라는 것이다. 왕필 스스로도 8괘 物象을 부정하지는 않고, 다만 象은 「역경｣의 본뜻을 포착하기 위한 수단에 지나지 않는다고 본다. 보다 자세히는 ｢역경｣의 卦와 辭를 言과 象과 意로 나누고, 辭를 구성하는 언어[言]와 卦와 辭를 연결하는 象은 卦와 辭의 의미[意]를 드러내기 위한 수단이라고 한다. 그는 辭의 언어[言]는 象을 드러내기 위한 수단이고, 象은 뜻[意]을 드러내기 수단이므로 궁극적으로 이해해야 할 것은 뜻[意]이라고 보았다. 왕필은 자신의 이 생각을 표현하기 위해 「장자」 외물편의 올가미와 통발의 비유를 사용하고 있다. 이 비유 때문에 많은 학자들이 왕필의 「周易注」는 노장적 관점에서 「주역」을 이해하였다고 잘못 이해하고 있다. 왕필은 老莊에 대해서 잘 알고 있었지만, 得意忘象論에서 잊어야할 대상으로서의 言과 象은 老莊에서 비판하는 인간의 사유체계로서의 언어가 아니고, 얻어야할 뜻[意]은 현상계를 초월하는 의미에서의 道가 아니다. ｢역경｣과 老莊의 사상이 일치하는가는 더 많은 연구가 필요하다고 본다. 왕필은 ｢역경｣의 구성체계에서 言·象·意를 이야기하고, 그가 言과 象을 통해 뜻을 얻는[得意] 과정에는 ｢십익｣의 도움을 얻지만 그 가운데 특히 ｢彖傳｣과 ｢象傳｣의 해석에 의존하여 經文을 해석하고 있다. 그의 ｢역경｣ 해석에 있어서 ｢십익｣에 대한 의존성과 그가 궁극적으로 포착한 의미에 儒家 윤리적 성격이 짙은 義를 사용하는 점에 있어서 그의 역 해석은 유가적 성격을 띤 義理易이라고 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 왕필의 易 해석은 그의 해석체계 내에서는 정합성을 띤다. 이에 대해 비판할 수 있는 소지는 그가 포착한 經文의 뜻이 과연 정확한가 하는 점이다. 經文의 정확한 의미가 무엇인가에 대해서 필자는 ｢역경｣ 가운데 나오는 故事를 중심으로 갑골문 연구와 고증학의 성과를 검토하였다.
