This paper looks for the methods to utilize photoarts for expression and communication of the humanistic thoughts and imagination. For that goal this paper firstly analyzed Benjamin's opinion on the development of photography and then looked around the role and meaning of the development of photography. Next we examined the development of photoarts and the role of photography that have developed around the confrontation and association between document and creativity of photography. Next this paper examined that the development of digital photoarts in what manner enlarged the possibility of creative expression and contributed the democratization of arts which Benjamin had told. And then this paper examined the methods to express the humanistic thoughts and imagination those photoartists had developed. We found out those pioneering methods in photomontage of Berlin Dadaists and Russian Avant-gardists and in Brecht's photoepigramm. Next we examined the efficient methods of photoarts to express the humanistic thoughts and imagination those had appeared thereafter. Among those methods firstly we looked into constructed photograph, composite photograph and specially digital pictorialism that used digital composite photograph. Lastly We looked into the combination of photographic image and text and sequence photography. Nowadays, because using digital media we can make the images we want, we can more easily and efficiently use those methods. The development of digital photoarts and digital culture have given the possibility of creatively using the photoarts, but that possibility do not be actualized automatically. The change and variety of expression technique itself can not lead the more valuable and creative culture. The key point is not simply the expression technique, but the expression of profound thoughts and imagination. So far many photoartists deal with the important theme of humanistic thoughts and imagination. However because there have not been active interchange and communication between photoarts and humanities, many photoartists had not been abundant in knowledge about those theme. So their understanding often remain in the sensational and fragmentary. On the other hand many scholar of humanities so far have adhered to language text, so they could have not use the useful media like photoarts for expression of the humanistic thoughts and imagination. In these circumstances if scholars of humanities use the various methods of photoarts those we have examined so far, they can express and communicate their thoughts and imagination more persuasively.

이 논문은 인문학적 사유와 상상력의 표현과 전달을 위해 사진예술을 창조적으로 활용할 수 있는 방안을 모색해 본 글이다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 우선 사진술의 발달에 대한 벤야민의 주장을 분석함으로써 사진예술의 발달이 어떤 역할을 할 수 있으며 어떤 의미를 갖고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 다음으로는 기록성과 창조성의 대립과 연관 관계를 둘러싸고 발전해 온 사진예술의 발달과정과 사진의 역할을 살펴보았다. 이어서 이 글은 디지털 사진예술의 발달 과정이 어떻게 창조적인 표현의 가능성을 넓히고 벤야민이 얘기하는 예술의 민주화에 기여하였는가를 분석하였다. 그러고 나서 본 논문에서는 그동안 사진예술가들이 개발해 온 인문학적 사유와 상상력을 표현할 수 있는 방법들을 살펴보았다. 인문학적 사유와 상상력을 표현하기 위해서 사진예술을 이용해 온 선구적인 방식을 우리는 베를린 다다이스트(Dadaist)들과 러시아 아방가르디스트(Avant-gardist)들의 포토몽타주, 그리고 브레히트의 사진시에서 찾아보았다. 그리고 그 이후 나타난 인문학적 사유와 상상력을 표현할 수 있는 효과적인 사진예술의 방식으로 우리는 우선 구성사진과 합성사진 그리고 그 중에서도 특히 디지털 합성사진을 이용한 디지털 픽토리얼리즘을 살펴보았다. 다음으로는 사진 이미지와 문자 텍스트의 결합, 그리고 연속사진 또는 엮음사진을 살펴보았다. 오늘날에는 디지털 매체를 이용하여 원하는 이미지들을 마음대로 만들어 낼 수 있기 때문에 이러한 방식들을 더욱 쉽고 효율적으로 사용할 수 있다. 그러나 디지털 사진예술 및 디지털 문화의 발달은 사진예술을 창조적으로 다양하게 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 열어놓기는 하였지만 그 가능성이 자동적으로 실현되는 것은 아니다. 발달한 디지털 기술을 이용한 표현기법의 변화 및 다양화 자체가 보다 가치 있고 창조적인 문화를 이끌 수는 없다. 중요한 것은 깊이 있는 사유와 상상력의 표현이지 단순한 표현기법상의 문제가 아니다. 그동안 사진예술 영역에서는 인문학적 사유와 상상력의 중요한 주제들을 실제로 다루어왔으며, 그것을 표현할 수 있는 다양한 방식을 개발해 왔다. 다만 인문학과의 활발한 교류와 소통이 없었기 때문에 그러한 주제에 대한 사진예술가들의 인식은 깊은 인문학적 소양을 결여한 채 다분히 감각적이고 단편적인 것에 머문 경우도 많았다. 다른 한편 인문학자들은 그동안 고답적으로 문자매체만을 고집함으로써 사진예술과 같은 훌륭한 매체를 인문학적 사유와 상상력의 표현을 위해 효과적으로 활용해 오지 못했다. 이런 상황에서 인문학이 발달한 디지털 매체들을 통해 이 글에서 살펴본 바와 같이 사진예술 영역에서 이루어진 다양한 방식들을 적극 활용한다면, 좀 더 설득력 있게 인문학적 사유와 상상력을 표현하고 전달할 수 있을 것이다.
