My paper deals with the issue of the crisis of human nature and its overcoming in our modern age. It is our shared recognition that the modern age has come upon the critical situation in terms of human nature. The environmental conditions of modern life seem to be grounded upon the traditions of the past and at the same time embarked upon the new journey to the unknown destination. We now have the task of dealing with the problems of modern crisis in connection with the traditional values. Throughout the history, the traditional ideas have been persistently readjusted and transformed in their historical context. Therefore it is demanded that all the values of the past should be closely examined and reviewed again. My paper consists of four parts. In the introduction, I made the diagnosis of the current situation of the modern culture. In the second part, I tried to clarify the relation between the modern culture and the traditional values. In the third part, I discussed how the traditional values could be adjusted to the modern age. Among the traditional values, the major philosophical traditions such as the Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism were examined in their relation to the contemporary culture. In the conclusion, I summed up the relation between the traditional values and the modern culture.

이 글은 인간성의 위기는 현대에만 귀속되는 고유한 현상이라고는 말할 수 없다. 인간성의 위기가 역사 속에서 거듭 반복되는 현상이었다고 한다면 현대에서 인간성의 위기를 다시 문제삼는 이유와 의미는 어디에 있는가? 그것은 현대의 삶과 생활조건이 우리에게 ‘우리는 어떻게 살아야 하는가’하는 물음을 또 다시 절박하게 강요하고 있기 때문이다. 현대의 삶의 조건은 과거의 전통에 의존하고 있으면서도 마치 또 다른 未知의 목적지를 향해 떠날 준비를 하고 있는 듯이 보인다. 현대인들은 마치 아직 행선지가 정해지지 않은 여행객처럼 불안하게 미래를 응시하고 있다. 과연 우리가 가야할 곳은 전혀 가보지 못한 신천지일까 아니면 우리에게 고향처럼 익숙한 곳일까? 이 여행자는 스스로에게 反問하고 있다. 우리는 이러한 정신적 상황에서 다시 모든 가치의 재점검 작업에 착수하게 되었다. 과연 우리에게 전통이란 무엇인가? 한 때는 우리에게 익숙했던 제 가치들은 오늘날 우리가 새로운 여행을 떠날려고 하는 이 순간에도 유용한 것인가? 아니면 새로운 땅을 탐험하기 위해서는 옛 지식을 모두 버려야 하는 것일까? 바로 이러한 의문을 가지고 우리는 현대인의 위기를 전통적 가치와의 상관관계 밑에서 바라보아야 할 과제를 지니게 된다. 본 논문에서 필자의 궁극적인 의도는 현대인들이 현대성에 매몰되지 않고 전통에서 현대와 조화될 수 있는 세계관을 이끌어 내고 또 아울러 그로부터 미래적 비젼을 형성해낼 수 있는지를 진지하게 음미하려고 하는 데 있다. 필자는 먼저 II장에서 ‘현대인의 정신적 상황과 현대문명의 위기’라는 주제아래 현대적 상황의 고유한 특성을 점검하고 아울러 현대적 문제의 본질이 무엇인가를 인식하려고 시도하려고 한다. 그리고 III장에서는 ‘전통적 가치의 현대적 변용’이라는 대 주제속에서 (1) 유교적 가치와 현대적 상황 (2) 불교의 현대적 변용의 모색 (3) 현대가 모색하는 도가적 비젼이라는 소주제들을 차례로 다루려고 한다. 이러한 작업을 토대로 전통적 가치가 현대적 상황에서 과연 성공적으로 적용가능한 것인지, 아니면 일정한 變用을 겪지 않고는 적용될 수 없는 것인지에 대한 해답이 모색될 수 있을 것이다. 우리가 추구하는 궁극적인 과제는 전통적 가치가 현대인에게 바람직한 생활방식과 미래적 전망을 제공할 수 있는가의 문제를 해명하는 것이 될 것이다.
