This is a paper to represent the purpose and method of the art and education in study of popular culture. First, my main concern is to open the idea of popular and popular culture. Rather, one of the severest difficulties is that these ideas are obscured. Most of literature on popular and popular culture merely paraphrases them without clarifying and discussing what they mean. To avoid this problem, I think it may make sense if this study is limited to a relatively small number of points in study of popular culture, and if the attempt were made to render these points and the supporting arguments as precisely and as thoroughly as possible. It should be clear from this procedure that the scope of this study is limited. It is not intended to be a definitive account of all of ideas about art and education and popular culture, burt rather a clear and thorough account of essential ideas of them as follow. 1) autonomy and selection 2) resistance and critical attitude 3) production and creativity 4) communication and a deep impression 5) praxis and pleasure

예술교육이 심각한 딜레마에 빠져있다고 한다. 주당 시수가 줄고, 급기야 내신 성적의 평가대상에서 제외시키려는 낌새까지 보인다. 사방에서 예술 경시를 개탄하며, 예술 교육의 당위성을 앞세운다. 대부분 예술 관련 교사들의 목소리이다. 그래서 당사자들의 입지에 대한 위기감 표출로 밖에 비춰지지 않는다는 말도 들린다. 이대로 예술교육이 매몰되어 가야 하는가? 문제는 ‘예술’이다. 예술에 대한 부정은 예술로 맞서야 하기 때문이다. 그러나 맞설 능력은 되어 있고, 맞설 태세는 갖추어져 있는가? 긍정적인 답이 나오지 않는다. 당연하다. 전열을 가다듬기는커녕 허상만 난무한다. 마치 유령과 같은 모습이다. 본질을 외면한 방법과 절차에 대한 논의에 집중하다 보니 그렇다. 그래서 곁가지에 가려 예술이 유령처럼 그림자만 남는 꼴이다. 다시 그 실상을 보자. 큰 것이 작은 것보다 잘 보인다. 플라톤의 가르침이다. 다시 문화를 보자. 예술보다 문화가 크기 때문이다. 그래서 대중문화연구에서 바라보는 예술교육이 주제이다. 이 글은 이러한 논지에서 예술교육의 본질적인 지향성과 그 실천적 대안을 모색하고 있다.
