The aim of this paper is to analyze the systems of Lee Jong-ryul's Theory of National Revolution and to inquire into its principles. Therefore, this is naturally not a plain delineation that simply arranges Lee Jong-ryul's view of history and revolutionary thoughts around his life. It also does not take the form of a chronology that itemizes the historical facts related to him along the course of his life. This is because we cannot take full hold of the essence of a science using only the connected data and materials as facts. What is the essence of a science? As he said, it is the concrete and effective power to solve historical tasks in a period of crisis and to make history advance toward a new age.
At this point, you might well ask this question: could it be that Lee Jong-ryul's thought still has a vital force in the present? We will answer with this point-blank question: is Lee Jong-ryul alive or dead? It is a natural question, in that scientific theories and thoughts cannot free themselves from their historical and social conditions. Although we risk giving the conclusion in advance, we will say, Lee Jong-ryul is stillalive. What are the grounds for that argument? First of all, we will examine the purpose and methodology of his National-Human Historical Science, because we think this is the nearest short-cut to the path to those grounds. Purpose is a sort of diagnosis, and the exact diagnosis is indispensable for the treatment of the disease. We cannot discuss how
to cure a disease whithout any diagnosis. Diagnosis is to discover problems.
We cannot determine the practical methodology for solving the problem until we seek the problem out. After we look into his purpose, we will determine the course of historical development and the path of revolution in our underdeveloped country in that context. After that we will carry out our search for the path to the method of the historical task and advancement, namely, the developmental course of National Revolution and the process of its historical advancement.

이 글은 이종률의 민족혁명론의 이론적 체계를 분석하고 그 원리를 규명하는 데 있다. 따라서 이 글은 이종률의 사학과 혁명사상을 그의 생애를 중심으로 정리하는 평면적인 서술이 아니다. 또한 그의 행적을 따라가며 그와 연관된 역사적 사실들을 요목조목 정리하는 사기(􈐩􇽛)의 형식을 취하는 것도 아니다. 그의 말대로 사실(􈐡􈘰)로서의 재료나 자료만으로는 그 학문의 생명력을 제대로 읽어낼 수 없기 때문이다. 학문의 생명력이란 무엇인가? 위기기 역사 사태를 시대적으로 구출하고 전진시키는 구체적이고도 효과적인 힘이다. 이쯤 되면 당연히 이런 반문이 나오게 마련이다. 과연 이종률의 학문은 현재적 생명력을 가지고 있는가? 그래서 우리는 단도직입적으로 이렇게 묻는다. ‘과연 이종률은 살았는가, 죽었는가?’ 학문적 이론이나 학설은 역사적􍿞 사회적 조건을 벗어날 수 없다는 점에서 당연히 제기될 수 있는 물음이다. 결론부터 미리 말한다면 ‘이종률은 아직도 살아 있다’. 그 논거가 무엇인가? 이를 위해 우리는 먼저 ‘민인사학의 문제의식과 그 방법론’을 살핀다. 왜냐하면 이것이 그 논거를 찾아가는 여러 가지 길들 가운데 가장 가까운 지름길이라고 여겨지기 때문이다. 문제의식이란 일종의 진단이며, 정확한 진단은 질병의 치유를 위해 필연적으로 전제되어야 한다. 질병에 대한 진단 없이 치유 방법을 논하기는 어렵다. 진단이란 문제를 발견하는 것이며, 문제를 발견하고 나서야 비로소 문제 해결을 위한 실천적 방법론이 나오기 때문이다. 그래서 우리는 그의 문제의식과 그 방법론을 살피고, 연장선상에서 후진성 우리 지역의 사로와 노선을 규정하고, 그 역사 사태의 구출과 전진의 길, 즉 ‘민족혁명’의 사로와 그 전진과정을 탐색해 간다.
