This paper emphasizes the importance of narrative approach in the ethical reflection. The standard account of moral rationality which is a dominant paradigm in the modern ethical theory distorts the nature of the moral life. First, It places an unwarranted emphasis on particular decisions and quandaries. By doing so, It suggests that ethical judgments can be justified independent of the agent. Second, It fails to account for the significance of moral notions and how they work to provide us skills of moral perceptions. It attempts to separate our moral notions from their narrative context. This is the reason why the standard account makes it difficult to explain why moral controversies are so irresolvable. Third, It separates the agent from his interests. In other words, it requires that we view our own moral projects and life as if we were outside observers. By correcting these extortions, narrative ethics pursues more desirable ethical reflection.
But does it imply ethical relativism to stress on the agent's perspective(or, the particular stories which form it)? According to Hauerwas, it avoids vicious relativism. Though narrative, which has relative aspects, plays a important role in forming morality, once formed, it is established as something universal required for all human beings, not just those in one society.
