초록

영어

In the middle of the last century, C.P. Snow raised an issue regarding the 'two cultures' and the absence of communication between them. In our day, the situation is more complicated owing to two things. One is the stronger belief in the unique truthfulness of science and the downfall of the humanities. The other is a deeper reflection of the limit of modern science and the crisis it causes. How can we 'humanitize' the achievements of science without involving scientism?
Science itself has become a myth of our culture ever since modern scientific revolutions. Scientism is a religion of science, the method of science. It emerges from the success of science and technology, and counts its method and rationality as the only legitimate things. Eliminative materialism, so called scientific explanation of human behavior and consciousness is hard to be persuasive. It intends to replace the folk psychology, the humanitarian explanation of mind, but it won't work well. Inductive model and deductive model of scientific justification fail as well. The relation of theory and evidence is not linear, but involves underdetermination. So we have to distinguish science practise and scientism effectively. Science should be regarded as a tentative knowledge claim.
All the three kinds of Postmodern cirticism of science deteriorate the fame of scientific objectivity and rationality. The viewpoints of T. Kuhn, R. Rorty and some feminists are extremists in that they are mentioning the alternative science, and the total deny of ongoing science. I do not agree with them for it negates the efficacy and success of science. But we should wake up from the illusion of scientism grown up in technopoly, realizing science is not the only one solution. On the contrary of the C.P. Snow's prescription, education of the Humanities should be stressed more. For the Humanities can resurrect the great tradition of the narrative and the rhetoric lost in an era of technopoly and scientism.
