This study aims to reveal the method of the analysis of culture between the School of Frankfurt and Neokantianism, especially focused on the viewpoint of the philosophy of culture and the criticism of culture. In terms of the School of Frankfurt, we will deal the viewpoint of Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse, and Benjamin. And relating to Neokantianism, we will discuss the viewpoint of Kant, Herder, and especially Cassirer. We know that the School of Frankfurt is interested in the criticism of ideology of mass culture, while the Neokantianism is interested in the origin, process, and future of culture. In this study, we will clarify a common feature and difference, and significance in terms of the analysis of culture, especially, relating to correlation with the philosophy of culture and the criticism of culture.

이 글은 인문학 분야의 다양한 문화분석 및 문화연구의 방법론들 가운데, 특별히 철학에서 프랑크푸르트학파와 신칸트학파의 입장을 선명하게 드러내고, 나아가 이러한 문화분석 방법론의 현실적 의의를 밝혀내는데 목적이 있다. 필자가 여기에서 두 입장을 상호 분석하여 비교하고자 하는 것은 바로 다음과 같은 이유에서다. 언뜻보면, 두 입장은 만날 수 없고 융합될 수 없는 이질적인 논의 영역으로 비춰질 수 있다. 그렇지만 문화분석에 대한 두 진영의 논의에서, 그러니까 사회과학과 인문과학간의, 혹은 사회철학과 문화철학간의, 아니면 문화비평과 문화철학간의 논의에서 사실은 상대방의 논의를 인정하고, 또한 동시에 그것을 자신들의 논의의 전제로 삼을 때에만, 각 진영은 자신들의 고유한 입장을 보다 설득력 있게 주장할 수 있게 될 것이라고 필자는 판단하고 있다. 바로 이 같은 이유에서 프랑크푸르트학파와 신칸트학파의 문화분석의 방법론을 상호 비교 고찰하여 그 의미를 되새겨보고, 그것의 공통점과 차이점을 밝혀보고자 하는 것이다.
