This article deals with human self-understanding in the contemporary period, the techno-cultural age. Since it is through mass culture that our self-understanding is most clearly revealed, I focus on the film The Matrix, a prominent product of contemporary mass culture. In this article I examine the self-understanding that is found in this film and provide a critique of the self-understanding of mass culture.
The self-understanding found in the film The Matrix is reflected in the following motifs: 'Machines exceed humans,' 'Humans are controlled by machines,' 'There is no true self', and 'Humans realize themselves, not through love, but through power.' Considering the development computer technology, the computational speed of computers will surely exceed that of humans in the near future. However, this achievement is limited to to the ability to compute. Humans will still be superior to computers in other areas. While humans are to some extent controlled by machines, machines are still controlled to a greater extent by humans. The Matrix exaggerates the control of machines through anthropomorphism, while the viewers refuse to admit the human control over machines.
Sometimes people feel that they are not themselves. This feeling is, in the post-industrial society, not the result of deception and doubt, but an inevitable consequence of a capitalistic society. The Matrix emphasizes this feeling of losing oneself, but conceals the practical loss of self with cinematic self-recovery. We should pay attention to this possibility. Regarding power as the means of self-actualization is a Hellenistic notion, one which was not completely overcome by the Christian tradition. The Matrix supports the idea of power, rather than that of Christian love, by juxtaposing Hellenistic themes with Christian stories. But we must ask whether power is a true means of self-actualization.
As the film shows, it is not religion or politics, as in the past, that is disturbing the human endeavor to accomplish a true understanding of oneself; in the contemporary period, it is rather mass culture that frustrates this endeavor. Mass culture spreads a deceptive self-understanding by constituting the consuming mass as the subject. Philosophical discourse must be directed towards the disclosure of this deceptive understanding of oneself,
