This thesis studies the universal prescriptivist theory of moral reasoning in R. M. Hare. Agreeing the traditional criticisim against naturalism and intuitionism, Hare developes the anti-intuitionist and non-naturalist theory of moral reasoning on the basis of the logical analysis of moral concepts.
Hare attempts to construct a system of moral reasoning. According to Hare, a system of moral reasoning is compounded of two necessary ingredients. The first requisite is the logical apparatus provided by the logic of moral concepts; prescriptivity and universalizability. The second requisite is morally relevant facts. He proposes the likely effects of possible actions on preference-satisfaction of people as candidates for morally relevant facts. According to Hare, the logic of prescriptivity and universalizability restricts moral reasoning formally by providing canons of moral reasoning, i.e., the requirements of universal prescribability. Morally relevant facts restricts moral reasoning
substantially by informing of preference or prescription of affected parties. Therefore, the universal prescriptivist method of moral reasoning requires that we adopt the principle which we can be willing to prescribe universally for all situations identical in their universal properties, even if we are in full cognizance of morally relevant facts.
Hare argues that this method of moral reasoning generates utilitarianism. According to his argument, the moral principle that we can be willing to prescribe universally for all situations identical in their universal properties, is the principle that maximizes the preference-satisfaction, in sum, of all those affected.
Hare makes a significant contribution to contemporary moral philosophy by means of showing that it is possible to construct the theory of moral reasoning which can avoid the naturalistic fallacy and the circular argument of intuitionism on the basis of logic and facts alone.
