This article inquires into the puzzles concerning the emergence of evil(􈙗) in ‘the study of human nature and principle’(􈔒􈆱􈸕). The Confucian philosophy of mind and human nature is generally based on the supposition that human nature(􈔒) is intrinsically good(􈓙). However, in fact, human may have evil thoughts and act evil conducts. This fact forced Yulgok(􈣸谷) to insist that more evil affect or emotion(􈙗􈩶) than good affect(􈓙􈩶) are emanated out of human mind. On a par with his insight, this article explicates the question whether there is in human nature the cause of evil, and the question how it is possible that more evil affect than good affect are emanated out of the innately good mind. In particular, we firstly criticise the conceptions of evil affect Yulgok constructed, and then try to analyze the puzzle of evil affect from the view point of ethical antecedentialism and consequentialism. Secondly it will be explicated that the conceptions of affect(􈩶), intent(􈤙) and passion(􈝇) have relationship with the emergence of evil, and finally ethical traits and significance of intent is explained from respects of moral will.

본 연구에서는 유학적 심성론에서의 악의 문제를 율곡의 사상을 중심으로 고찰하려 한다. 율곡은 인간의 본성이 선하다는 성선론의 관점에 서면서도 인간에게는 惡情이 善情보다 더 많이 발출된다고 하는 역설적인 논지를 개진하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 어떻게 선한 본성을 가진 인간이 악을 행하게 되는가 하는 문제와 선한 본성의 인간에게 어떻게 惡情이 더 많이 발출되는 지의 문제에 각별히 주목하고자 한다.
