In the 20th century, Asia started to stand out as an important position historically in terms of politics and the economy, and Asian style surfaced as one of the cultural trends that leads global culture as it combines with cultural factors such as modernism. The purpose of this study is to aid planning of a product that reflects a mixed form of costume history of Asia by developing a design based on the formative characteristics of ethnic costumes of the Asian region which can be applied to contemporary fashion. Theoretical examination and analysis was conducted on cases of Asian style presented in contemporary fashion since the year 2000 and through precedent studies and literature about ethnic costumes of Asia from the end of the 16th century to 19th century. The results show that the formative characteristics of ethnic costume of the Asian region that can be applied to contemporary fashion are as follows: first, a plaintive planar characteristic of a linear silhouette, second, organic rhythmical beauty, third, variability of form, and fourth, symbolic expression of external elements. 10 types of designs that applied ethnic costumes of Asia were developed through formative approaches based on the four formative characteristics above. The conclusion of this study of fashion design production that applies ethnic costumes of the Asian region to contemporary fashion is as follows: First, the formative beauty of space implemented through a planar straight line is utilized as a sculptural element of contemporary fashion while simultaneously highlighting the features of Asian tradition, and thus offers limitless potential when re-interpreted to a contemporary perspective. Second, the free adjustment in the ethnic costumes of Asia is a way of expressing diverse asymmetric beauties, and if expressed properly with the use of elements such as proportion, balance and motion from a contemporary perspective, presents limitless potential. Third, designs developed through modification of base line on a non-structural plane can be re-organized in a contemporary sense, and can accommodate extensive themes of fashions.

20세기에 접어들면서 민족주의의 등장과 더불어 아시아지역이 정치, 경제 등 세계사적으로 중요한 위치로 부각되기 시작하고 포스트모더니즘과 같은 문화요인과 결합하면서 아시아 풍은 세계의 문화를 선도하는 하나의 문화사조로 자리 잡게 되었다. 이에 본 연구의 목적은 현대 패션에 적용 가능한 아시아지역 민족복식의 조형적 특징을 추출하여 디자인을 개발함으로써 아시아지역 복식의 융합된 형태를 반영한 상품 기획에 도움이 되고자한다. 연구의 범위는 16세기말∼19세기의 아시아 민족복식에 관한 선행논문과 문헌자료를 통한 이론적 고찰과 2000년대 이후의 현대 패션에 나타난 아시안 룩의 사례를 분석하였다. 그 결과 현대 패션에 적용 가능한 아시아지역 민족복식의 조형적 특징을 첫째, 직선적 실루엣의 비구조적인 평면성 둘째, 유기적인 율동미 셋째, 형태의 가변성으로 도출하였다. 이러한 3가지 조형적 특징을 토대로 형태적 접근 가능성을 모색하여 아시아지역의 민족복식을 응용한 10종의 디자인을 개발하였다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 현대 패션에 적용 가능한 아시아지역의 민족복식을 응용한 패션디자인 작품제작 연구 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 평면형의 직선적인 실루엣을 통한 공간적인 형태미는 아시아 룩의 전통미를 표현해 주는 동시에 현대 패션의 조형적 요소로도 활용되고 있어 현대적인 재해석을 할 경우 그 가능성이 무한하다. 둘째, 아시아지역의 민족복식에서 보이는 자유로운 여밈은 다양한 비균제적인 미를 표현하는 방법이며 특히 현대적인 이미지로 비례, 균형, 율동미 등을 적절하게 표현한다면 그 가능성을 기대할 수 있을 것이다. 셋째, 비구조적인 평면성을 통해 근본적인 선을 발전 변형시킨 디자인 개발은 현대적 감각으로 재구성이 가능하여 패션 테마의 다양성과 확대가 높다는 특징이 있다.
