The current form of neckties originated from cravats of the 17th century, which respect individuality, allowing men to pursue one’s own character and style. When cravats were first introduced to royalty, they were simply considered as one of many fashion accessories, but as time went on, they were worn as a part of formal wear that shows authority. Although the modern day presents more varied and liberal designs for neckties, there is a lack of studies on the aesthetics of costumes, especially in the field of aesthetics of ties and cravats. Thus, it would be meaningful to confirm the weight of ties as a fashion accessory by analyzing aesthetics of cravats that have been developed as ties. Hence, the purpose of this study is as follows. First, studying the aesthetic characteristic of cravats of the 17th century to understand influences from the aesthetics of costumes and art and prove the importance of fashion accessories as an independent fashion item. Secondly, this study aimed to examine changes in cravats in order to find out the artistic value of cravats as a fashion item. This study reached the following conclusions. First, this study confirmed the trend of cravats in fashion by reviewing changes of cravats that were influenced based on shifts in fashion. Secondly, this study illuminated the aesthetic value of cravat design beyond the notion of a simple accessory. Lastly, this study proved the firm relationship between aesthetic value and cravat design by analyzing the relation between the formative aspects and graceful aesthetic of cravats of the Rococo period.

오늘날 남성복에서 품위와 개성을 나타내는 필수적인 아이템인 넥타이는 17세기 크라바트에서 시작되었다. 크라바트는 현대 타이의 전신으로 남성의 미적 센스를 보여주는 중요한 아이템인데도 불구하고 복식미적 접근이 많지 않은 상황이다. 의상의 복식미는 다른 조형예술에 비해 실용성이란 목적에서 다소 소홀히 다루어져 왔으나 현대에 이르러서는 실용적 목적을 지나 치장하는데 무게를 둔 미적 가치를 지니게 되었으며 의상의 복식미에 관한 연구가 점차 활발해졌다. 그러나 패션소품으로 중요한 위치의 넥타이의 미적 특성을 연구한 자료는 부족한 실정이다. 특히나 미적 범주로 나뉜 특정의 미를 넥타이에 결부시켜 연구한 자료는 많이 부족한 상태이다. 이러한 시점에서 남성복의 비중있는 장신구인 넥타이의 전신인 크라바트의 우아미를 연구하는 것은 장신구의 의상 소품으로서의 중요성을 재확인하는데 의미 있을 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 17세기 발생된 크라바트의 종류와 변천을 알아본다. 둘째, 크라바트의 미적 범주를 알아봄으로써 패션소품이 의상에서 지니는 비중을 알아본다. 셋째, 로코코 크라바트의 미적 특성과 우아미를 살펴봄으로써 미학적 측면과 패션소품이 결부 되어 지니게 되는 그 예술적 가치를 확인한다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 의상의 변화에 따라 늘 변천해왔던 크라바트의 종류와 변천을 살펴봄으로써 패션소품이 의상 못지않은 민감한 유행 주기를 갖고 있다는 것을 확인했다. 둘째, 크라바트도 시대의 의상처럼 미적 범주가 적용됨을 확인하여 패션소품의 중요성을 재조명해 보았다. 셋째, 로코코 시대의 크라바트의 조형성이 어떻게 우아미와 연결되어 있는 알아봄으로써 미학적 측면과 패션 소품이 결부되어 그 예술적 가치를 지니고 있다는 것을 확인했다.
