This study focused on spiritual intelligence which is an ultimate intelligence holistic education seeks. Holistic education is a philosophy of education based on the premise that each person finds identity, meaning, and purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world, and to humanitarian values such as compassion and peace. Holistic education aims to call forth from people an intrinsic reverence for life and a passionate love of learning. The concept of holism refers to the idea that all the properties of a given system in any field of study cannot be determined or explained by the sum of its component parts. Instead, the system as a whole determines how its parts behave. A holistic way of thinking tries to encompass and integrate multiple layers of meaning and experience rather than defining human possibilities narrowly. Spiritual intelligence is a term used to indicate a spiritual correlate to IQ (Intelligence Quotient) and EQ (Emotional Quotient). Like EQ, SQ is becoming more mainstream in scientific inquiry and philosophical/psychological discussion. In spite of both its popular currency and its protracted retraction, spiritual intelligence as an emergent, viable construct within psychology, bolstered particularly by Transpersonal Psychology, is receiving considerable scholarship. In order to increase SQ, meditation is commonly used. In holistic curriculum universe story, journal writing, films as content are used in the school setting.

이 논문은 홀리스틱 교육이 추구하는 목적으로서 아직 충분히 이해되지 않은 상태이기는 하지만 제3의 지능이라고 할 수 있는 ‘영성지능(SQ)’을 고찰하였다. SQ란 우리가 의미와 가치의 문제를 다루고 해결할 때 사용하는 지능을 말한다. 다시 말하면 우리의 행동과 삶을 광범위하고 풍부하며 의미 있는 맥락에 자리매길 수 있게 하는 지능이며, 어떤 일련의 행동이나 삶의 경로가 다른 것보다 의미 있다고 평가할 수 있게 하는 지능을 말한다. SQ는 IQ와 EQ가 효과적으로 기능하는 데 필수적인 기초가 된다. 또한 이 글에서는 인간의 궁극적인 지능인 SQ 관련 여러 학자들의 정의와 모델이 제시되고 있다. 이와 관련하여 전 세계적으로 대안교육운동으로서 홀리스틱 교육이 궁극적으로 추구하는 점이 바로 영성(spirituality)이라는 점이다. 홀리스틱 교육은 철학적 배경, 심리학적 배경, 사회학적 배경을 가지고 있는데, 이 중에서 핵심어는 홀리즘(holism)이며 만물이 서로 연관되어 있다는 전연관적인 사고라고 할 수 있다. 다시 말하면 홀리스틱 교육은 영성지능을 발달시키는 것과 직결되어 있다. 결국 21세기의 교육의 과제는 궁극적인 지능인 영성지능을 개발하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 바로 이러한 것이 홀리스틱 교육이 추구하는 목표이기도 하다.
