Fund managers might operate their funds sub-optimally because of fund liquidity and return stability. In other words, cash inflow could force managers to consider fund liquidity so that they may give up their optimal portfolio strategy. In this study, we analyzed the impact of cash flow into funds that can change the behavior of fund managers and following change of performance of funds. Especially, when cash flow goes into funds we hypothesized managers of fund will add new chips into their (optimal) portfolio basket that can reduce their performance but can enhance liquidity of fund. We devided funds with color(investment style) and number of chips(companies in portfolio), and analyzed the relation between cash flow, performance and combination of chips to find significant results. Results show us that when cash flow goes into funds, fund managers tend to add new companies instead of adding number of stocks of original fund. That means they are to avoid liquidity problem and to smooth performance of funds. But actions like these can spoil the optimal portfolio and hinder the performance of funds in the final.

펀드가 설정된 이후 규모가 대형화되면서 성과는 저하될 가능성이 있다. 즉 유동성을 향상하고 급격한 수익률의 변화를 피하기 위한 펀드매니저의 투자행동 측면에서 펀드로 유입되는 현금흐름은 최적 포트폴리오를 악화시킬 수 있다. 펀드매니저는 현금흐름에 의한 규모의 성장에 따라 유동성관리의 압박에 직면할 수 있고 이런 압박은 펀드의 포트폴리오 전략변경을 유발하고 최적 이하의 의사결정을 만들어 내는 원인이 될 수 있는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 펀드로 유입되는 현금흐름이 펀드의 운용성과, 운용행태 등에 미치는 영향을 운용스타일 별로 나누어 분석했고 그 결과 펀드매니저는 펀드로의 현금유입이 이루어질 때 포트폴리오 구조를 변경하고 이는 순차적으로 펀드의 성과를 낮추는 요인으로 작용한다는 가설에 대해 실증하고 있다. 구체적으로 펀드로 현금이 유입될 때 기존 포트폴리오의 구성 종목 외에 종목 추가가 이루어지고 이것이 결과적으로는 성과를 저해하는 요소로 작용하고 있다는 해석이 가능하다.
