The purpose of this study was to compare news coverages on progressive judgments of conservative and progressive newspapers. As results, this study reached some conclusions. They were as follows: Firstly, the distinguished differences on news coverages of conservative and progressive newspapers were shown. The former had emphasized negative tone of an argument against progressive judgments, while the latter had used mainly neutral tone of an argument. The both had a tendency not to show the opposite tone of an argument in common. Secondly, the main theme of conservative newspapers was predominantly 'a principle of law of judgment', while one of progressive newspapers was 'criticism on criticism of progressive judgments by conservative press, conservative group, the governing party and so on'. Meanwhile, conservative newspaper offered more various themes on the judgments than progressive newspaper. Thirdly, conservative newspapers had a tendency to use sources and interviewees who had negative attitude toward the judgments. This tendency was able to give the audience a distorted view that almost citizen was bitter against the judgments. Meanwhile, The conservative and progressive newspapers commonly appeared same problem that they didn't refer to citizen's opinions on the judgments. Lastly, the results of this study are limited to news coverages on progressive judgments. Because the future studies on conservative judgments will be able to found conflicting results.

본 연구는 1심에서 진보적 성향의 판결이 난 ‘강기갑의원 국회 사건’, '전교조 시국선언', ‘PD수첩의 광우병 보도’를 대상으로 보수신문과 진보신문의 보도 경향의 차이를 밝혀보고자 하였다. 그 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 보수신문은 판결에 대해 비판적인 논조를, 진보신문은 중립적인 논조를 많이 사용하는 차이를 보였으나, 공통적으로 자신들의 성향과 반대되는 논조를 거의 노출시키지 않고 있었다. 둘째, 단순히 사실을 전달하는 기사를 제외하면 보수신문은 판결법리를, 진보신문은 언론, 여당, 보수단체 등이 판결을 비판하는 것에 대한 비판과 판결법리를 기사 쟁점으로 가장 많이 사용하였다. 보수신문은 쟁점을 다양하게 구성하기는 했지만, 판결을 비판하는 과정에서 담당판사의 소양, 소속 연구회 등 판결과 직접적인 인과관계가 밝혀지지 않은 요인들을 부각시키는 문제점을 보였다. 반면, 진보신문은 기사의 쟁점이 다양하지 못하여 사건이 가지는 다양한 측면을 제시하지 못하고 있었다. 셋째, 보수신문은 판결내용에 비판적인 취재원을 옹호적인 취재원보다 훨씬 많이 활용함으로써 편향된 모습을 보였다. 이런 취재원 활용 행태는 독자들로 하여금 판결에 대한 반응이 비판 일색이라는 왜곡된 인상을 심어줄 수 있다. 한편, 보수나 진보신문이나 일반 시민들을 거의 취재원으로 활용하지 않아 언론 상에서 시민들이 논쟁의 주체가 되지 못하는 것도 문제점으로 드러났다. 주지할 점은 보수신문이 좀더 편향으로 나타난 본 연구결과를 진보적 성향의 판결에 한정지어 해석해야 한다는 것이다. 보수적 성향의 판결에 대해서는 정반대의 결과가 도출될 수도 있기 때문이다.
