The stone pagoda discovered in Daepyeong-ri, currently in the collection of Dongguk University Museum, reproduces the Chinese Ashoka stupa, in granite. It is the only Ashoka stupa ever found in the Korean peninsula, significant also as evidence decisively proving that there was exchange between it and the Wuyue Kingdom. The iconography on the sarira reliquary of this pagoda, although similar to that of the Chinese Ashoka stupa, concerning images from the lives of Prince Mahasattva, Moonlight King and King Sivi, has the life story of Sudhira or the Quick-eyed King (King of Merciful Virtue) replaced by that of a completely different character, a certain Prince Sudana. The Korean pagoda differs from its Chinese original also in terms of expressive techniques; the composition is simpler in the former, with the surrounding areas left blank and secondary characters omitted. The capstone of the pagoda, even as it closely follows the traditional ornamental style of its time in its horse ear-shaped corners, for example, is given more details, with images from the life of Buddha. In comparison, the iconographic content in the rear sections of the capstone of the Chinese Ashoka stupa is executed more bluntly, making many of the images represented there unclear. As for the stone pagoda of Daepyeong-ri, it depicts with great clarity only those images related to three chapters of Buddha’s life: conception, birth and nirvana. Meanwhile, not as many seated Buddhas are sculpted on the square stone slabs in the base section of the pagoda, as in the Chinese Ashoka stupa. But, this is compensated by a pair of two seated Buddhas sitting next to each other, a whole new iconographic element, placed on all four sides. At the site in Daepyeong-ri where the stone pagoda was discovered, two stone pieces sculpted with eye and arabesque designs were also found, suggesting that the base section was originally two-tiered; in other words, there was a lower stone base below the square base on which it is currently resting. The stone pagoda of Daepyeong-ri is significant in that although it follows the style and composition of the sarira reliquary of the Chinese Ashoka stupa, it re-adapts the content of Buddhist scripts in a manner more suited for stone construction, creating, as a result, an Ashoka stupa with a uniquely Korean stylistic stamp. The popularity of Ashoka stupas was both geographically limited and short-lived in China. In the Korean peninsula where the ruling dynasty of Goryeo mainly exchanged with the Song Dynasty, there does not appear to have been a particular keenness to build Ashoka stupas, a symbol of Wuyue culture. This may be the reason why we have a lone surviving example in the Chungcheongnam-do area, at a considerable distance from Gaeseong, Goryeo’s capital city, attesting to the exchange with Wuyue that once took place.
