Janghangri temple site is the temple site of unified Silla towards southeastern direction at the foot of Toham Mt., Gyeongju. There is hardly any documented data as it is difficult to find out about the site name but there are main hall site and restored stones of western, eastern pagodas and stone arts like statue of Buddha and a pedestal. According to the research stated until now, the production period of eastern and western pagodas and statue of Buddha at Janghangri temple site is generally thought to be around the first half of the 8th century. Despite being twin pagodas, however, many problems that the different relief of the east and the west pagoda at Janghangri temple site and the different allocations of twin pagoda Buddhist temple in Unified Silla, etc are not solved, yet. Among these issues, this study focuses on differences of relieves sculpted at the east and the west pagoda of Janghangri temple site to consider generally. First of all, the east and the west pagoda at Janghangri temple site has the 5levels of same structure and basement construction. Particularly the basement show the character of mid 8th century so it is hard to think that they are constructed on different year. As we consider the relief of the west pagoda follows the style of Seokgulam and has realistic expression using appropriate depth. On the other hand, the relief of east pagoda has relation with style of the tomb of the kind and has very much exaggerated depth and sculpture. However, both have factors thought at the end of 8th century so the basement and the pagoda reveals that these pagodas are constructed in mid 8th or latest at the end of 8th century. Therefore, the same construction time but the different sculpture means that the sculpturer were different. That is, the group who process the stones when making this twin pagoda is different from the sculpturer and this suggests possible job allocation of craftsmen and the process was temperately processed. Therefore, this temperate process means that the group of craftsmen came together when the operation must be accompanied by them and the change of sculpturer can be connected to the construction order, sculpture method of the twin pagoda in unified Silla period where the another pagoda is constructed after completion of the other. Therefore the different relief of the east and the west pagoda at Janghangri temple site is the very important data that shows coexistence of personal style in same era and also provide a chance to think about the operation of craftsman as well as structure of pagoda.

장항리사지는 경주 토함산 기슭에 동남향으로 위치한 통일신라시대의 절터이다. 寺址의 명칭조차 알 수 없을 만큼 문헌적 자료는 全無하나 금당지와 복원된 서탑, 동탑의 석재편, 불상 그리고 대좌 등의 석조 미술품들이 남아있다. 지금까지 개진된 연구에 따르면 장항리사지 동서탑과 불상의 제작 시기는 8세기 전반으로 보는 시각이 일반적이다. 그러나 쌍탑임에도 불구하고 相異한 탑부조상, 통일신라시대 쌍탑 가람과 다른 독특한 가람배치 등 장 항리사지가 지닌 여러 문제들은 아직까지 해결되지 않고 있다. 이 난제들 중 본 논문은 장항리사지 동서 탑의 초층 탑신에 조각된 부조상의 차이에 주목하여 전반적인 고찰을 시도하였다. 먼저 장항리사지 동서탑은 오층이라는 탑의 조형과 기단부의 결구구조가 동일하다. 특히 결구구조의 형식은 8세기 중반 경의 특징을 보여 두 탑이 다른 시기에 제작되었을 가능성은 힘들다. 이를 토대로 조 각을 분석하면 서탑은 석굴암의 조각 양식을 따르며 적절한 양감을 통한 사실적 조각 표현을 보인다. 반면 동탑은 왕릉의 조각 양식과 관련성을 보이며 과장된 양감과 도식화된 조각이 나타나 서로 다른 특징 이 확인된다. 그러나 두 조각 모두 8세기 후반에 나타나는 양식적 요소가 간취되어 결구구조와 탑부조상 을 종합적으로 검토할 경우 장항리사지 동서탑은 이르면 8세기 중반, 늦어도 8세기 후반 경에는 제작되 었을 것으로 판단된다. 제작시기는 같으나 탑에 부조된 조각이 다르다는 것은 탑부조상의 조각가가 달랐 음을 의미한다. 즉 쌍탑 조영시 석재를 가공하는 石匠집단과 조각가가 다르다는 뜻이며 이는 역할이 다 른 장인들의 분업 가능성을 시사하며 나아가 석장 집단과 조각가들이 한시적으로 작업하였음을 암시한 다. 이러한 한시적 작업은 불사 조영시 장인의 운용이 필요에 따라 결합하는 체제였음을 짐작케 하며 한 시적 작업을 통한 조각가의 교체는 한 탑을 완성한 후 나머지 한 탑을 제작하는 통일신라시대 쌍탑의 積 成, 조영 방법까지 연계해 볼 수 있다. 따라서 장항리사지 동서탑의 相異한 부조상은 동시대 개인양식의 공존을 보여주는 귀중한 자료인 동시에 고대 쌍탑의 건탑 체제와 장인의 운용 문제를 생각할 수 있는 계 기가 되었다.
