It was 1950's that modern academic system was institutionalized in Korean universities. Every dept. of Korean universities was institutionalized at those period, and in each part suggested its own academic topics and came to share amongst each researcher group. By doing so, they began to establish their professional research methodology. The institutes of Korean studies were organized at that time in every university, surrounding dept. of Korean language and literature, history and philosophy. Such research sections were sharing the same key words of ‘the classic’ and ‘the tradition’, and those concepts has been some influential effect until now.
Most of research topics of the journals of Korean studies were published in the institute of Korean studies in university dealt with the pre-modern period, especially Joseon period. First, in case of dept. of Korean language and literature, the papers were contributed in journal of Korean studies were about the classical texts with notes and lots of papers dealt with the topics regarding literary history. Second, in case of dept. of history, the researchers tried to recompose of Joseon history with modern academic methodology, and also came to accumulate some study of historiography in the lineage of tradition on study of Joseon, alias JoseonHak. Third, in case of dept. of philosophy, the academic identity was formed according to import the western academic discipline of university. So even in a case of Korean philosophy, the western research methodological styles were adapted by the Korean philosophers who were majoring Korean philosophy. The system of three dept. of college of humanities in Korean universities like ‘Korean language and literature-Korean history-Korean philosophy’ were confirmed in 1950's. Even though each department tried to confirm its own identity, it could be founded some tendency of interdisciplinary studies. Such a tendency shows that some approach on the humanities of pre-modern period had some blind spot as long as approaching such a modernistic academic system. Such a tendency was kept until 1980's, and later, in 1990's, the institute of Korean studies in Korean universities tried to find out their own turning point; computerization of materials, global korean studies, and recomposition of Korean studies as East Asian studies.

1950년대는 대학을 중심으로 근대적 학문 체계가 정립된 시기다. 이 때 분과학문 별 학회가 형성되었고, 각각의 고유한 학술 의제를 형성하고 공유하면서 과학으로서의 학문 연구 방법론을 수립해 나갔다. 대학별로 한국학 연구소가 설립된 것도 이 시기인데, 국문학ㆍ역사학ㆍ철학 등 인문학 내부의 분과학문별 전공자가 한국학의 주요한 연구 영역을 구축했다. 이때 한국학의 키워드로 작용한 ‘고전’과 ‘전통’의 개념은 현재까지도 영향력을 발휘하고 있다. 1950～60년대의 인문학 분과학문별 학회지에서는 전근대시기를 대상으로 각 학문 영역의 범주설정과 학문사를 구축하려는 연구 성향을 보여주었다. 국문학의 경우, 학술지에 고전 자료를 소개하고 문학사 서술에 관한 공동 의제를 형성하면서 학문 연구의 대상과 방법론에 대한 쟁점을 형성하고 학술의제를 공유해왔다. 역사학의 경우, 근대적ㆍ과학적 연구방법론으로 조선사를 재구성하고자 했으며, 조선학의 전통 속에서 ‘사학사’를 수립하는 형식으로 학적 성과를 축적했다. 철학의 경우, 학문의 출발이 서양의 개념을 유입한 것이었기 때문에, 한국철학 연구는 서양철학의 방법론을 한국 상황에 적용하는 차원에서 수행되었다. 한국학의 주요 범주를 구성하는 ‘국문학-한국철학-한국사’의 영역은 1950년대에 이미 확정되었으며, 각 학문 분야별 학적 정체성을 형성하려 했음에도 불구하고, 영역을 넘나드는 학제간 연구 성향이 발견되었다. 이는 전근대 시기의 통합 인문학을 대상으로 한 분과학문별 접근이 사실상 무의미해지는 지점이 있었기 때문이다. 대학 내부의 한국학연구소에서 이러한 학적 경향은 대체로 1980년대까지 지속되었으며, 학술지에서 기획 특집을 구성하면서 인문학 내부의 분과 학문의 학술 의제를 합집합적으로 총합하는 단계를 넘어서, 한국학 의제를 기획하여 분과학문별 학제간 연구를 주도하고 각각의 학술 의제를 한국학을 중심으로 재배치하는 연구 단계로 이행했다. 이러한 한국학 연구는 1990년대에 이르러 방향 전환을 시도하게 되는데 첫째 자료의 전산화, 둘째 분단과 통일을 고려한 한국학의 재구성과 세계화 시대의 한국학의 모색, 셋째 동아시아학으로서의 한국학 연구라는 세 방향의 전망을 제시하고 구현하는 과정으로 나타났다.
