초록

영어

Although Tiantai, Mantra, Sukkavati have greatly influenced and rooted their basis within Japanese culture of its time, the unfamiliar abstractness of Tiantai and overly complicated ceremonial procedures have failed to appeal themselves to the general public. It is needless to say they have influenced the early development of Buddhist art as they became as the inspiration for the public’s religious faith. Zen from later period of Kamakura has also affected the Buddhist art, which left distinguishable traces such as emphasis on the simplicity and estheticism. This emphasis enhanced the development of teachings of the house of Samurai which later advanced the growth of Buddhism in Japan. This thesis will focus around the Ashikaga Yoshimasa and his fellow artists most notably Doboshu-people, a zen monk and other Japanese painter who paint traditional Sung and Yuan dynasty paintings whose works have become the fundamental bases of the culture of Higashi-yama. In doing so, the thesis will concentrate on the portrait of Ashidaga Yoshimasa from Tokyo National Museum collection as it raises scholarly questions that are yet to be solved. Some of the questions raised are the rooms description and arrangements of the house of the Samurai shown behind the portrait. The other questions includes portrait's background painting of fusuma-e painting which shows typical characteristics of Yamato-e painting from higashi-yama period rather than painters who follow Sung and Yuan dynasty painting.
