Devadatta is Buddha's younger cousin. In relation with saṃgha-bheda, he was recorded to have asked the Buddha to hand over the religious association to him due to Buddha's old age in his later days. At the same time, Buddhist classics recorded that he was Buddha's greatest rival in his palace days. But, between the two records on 'he asked to hand over the religious association due to Buddha's old age' and 'he competed with the Buddha during his palace days,' there are totally different recognitions about the difference of their ages. That is, the former one presupposes that the two men had a considerable age difference, and the latter one presupposes that they had similar ages. These two kinds of records about the age difference raise a problem in understanding the relation of Devadatta and the Buddha. In this paper, the age difference of Devadatta and the Buddha is arranged first through the records in Vinaya-piṭaka and Buddhist classics. And, through the implication in it, the secondary feasibility approach is attempted. Then, as the final result, the real age difference of Devadatta and the Buddha is investigated. Through this, we can comprehend that the age difference problem of Devadatta and the Buddha shown in the records of Vinaya-piṭaka and Buddhist classics has originated from the difference of view point between the 'realistic aspect' and the 'religious aspect' and that the real age difference between Devadatta and the Buddha was about 23~24. When considering that the story of competition between Devadatta and the Buddha during the palace days was a defensive device of Buddhist classics to get the cause of saṃgha-bheda event, we can see that the records on the saṃgha-bheda event precedes the records of Buddhist classics and has the higher feasibility. Therefore, it would be more desirable to accept the record of Buddhist classics about the competition in the view point of religious symbolism. That is, as the different records on the age difference between Devadatta and the Buddha was originated from the same aspect of saṃgha-bheda event, strictly speaking they are not the two separated records but one record of two different view points in two strata due to the difference of 'reality' and 'significance.'

제바달다는 붓다의 사촌동생으로 破僧事관련 기록들에는 붓다 만년 붓다의 연만한 나이를 이유로 교단을 물려줄 것을 요청했다고 기록되어 있는 인물인 동시에 佛傳들에서는 붓다의 왕궁시절 최대 경쟁자로 등장하고 있는 인물이다. 그런데 ‘붓다의 연만한 나이를 이유로 교단승계를 요청한다는 것’과 ‘붓다의 왕궁시절 경쟁했다’는 두 기록의 사이에는 두 사람의 나이 차이에 대한 전혀 다른 인식이 존재하고 있어 주목된다. 즉, 전자가 두 사람이 상당한 나이 차이를 가지는 인물이라는 점을 전제하고 있다면, 후자는 근접한 동년배임을 상정하고 있는 것으로 이해될 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 두 가지의 나이 차이에 관한 기록은 제바달다와 붓다의 관계를 이해하는데 있어서 문제를 야기한다. 본고는 붓다와 제바달다의 나이 차이를 律藏과 佛傳들의 기록들을 통해서 1차로 정리하고, 이의 내포의미를 통한 2차적인 타당성 접근을 시도한 뒤, 마지막 결과로써 붓다와 제바달다의 실질적인 나이 차이를 규명해 보고자 한 것이다. 이를 통해서 우리는 破僧事관련 기록들과 불전의 기록들에서 나타나 보이는 제바달다의 나이 차이 문제가 ‘실제적인 측면’과 ‘종교적인 측면’의 관점 차이에 의해 비롯된 것이며, 붓다와 제바달다의 실질적인 나이 차이는 대략 23 ~ 24세 정도가 된다는 것을 파악해 볼 수가 있게 된다. 제바달다가 붓다와 왕궁시절에 경쟁하였다는 것도 破僧伽의 원인을 구하기 위한 불전의 防禦機制라는 점을 고려한다면, 파승사의 기록이 불전의 기록에 앞서며, 보다 높은 타당성을 확보한다는 것을 알 수가 있다. 그러므로 불전의 경쟁기록은 종교적인 상징성의 관점에서 수용되는 것이 보다 바람직한 접근이라고 하겠다. 즉, 두 가지의 제바달다 나이에 관한 상이한 기록은 결국 파승사라는 동일한 측면을 내원으로 하고 있는 것이므로 엄밀히 말해서 양자는 유리된 각각의 기록이 아닌 ‘실제’와 ‘의미’의 차이에 의한 두 가지 층차의 서로 다른 입각점의 기록이라고 할 수가 있는 것이다.
