Chih-li(知禮) and Zun-Shi(遵式) is the leading exponents of the thought of T'ien T’ai during the Sung Dynasty. A theorist, Chih-li established the legitimacy of T'ien T'ai thought; Zun-Shi was a man of action and primarily practiced the methods of repentance. Among those methods of repentance, this study explores Zun-Shi’s idea and its characteristics related to the thought of the Pure Land. Other scholars examined Zun-Shi’s idea of the Pure Land, distinguishing it from that of Chih-i and Chih-li. However, Zun-Shi systemized his own idea of the Pure Land in line with the thought of Chih-i(智顗) and Chih-li. The distinctive features of Zun-Shi’s thought of the Pure Land are as follows. First, he created harmony between Buddhist prayers and methods of repentance in his writing. The form is based on the Fa-Hua-San-Mei-Chan-Yi(『法華三昧懺儀』) and the content is based on the thought of the Pure Land. It consists of the traditional methods of repentance of the T'ien T'ai, the five kinds of repentance, and deals with the idea of observation of the truth. Second, Zun-Shi united Buddhist prayers and rituals. The rituals follow the ten rituals in the ‘Fa-Hua-San-Mei-Chan-Yi’. They are based on the thought of the Pure Land and focus on observation of the truth. Third, he popularized the philosophy of the Pure Land of T'ien T'ai. His writing, the Wang-Sheng-Jing-Tu-Jue-Yi-Xing-Yuan-Er-Men( 『往生淨土決疑行願二門』)describes a way of practicing in real life. The important elements are ‘the door of no doubts(決疑門)’ and ‘the door of practice and wish(行願門).’ The above three factors are characteristics of Zun-Shi’s thought on the Pure Land. Zun-Shi created a philosophy of the Pure Land of T'ien T'ai that has distinctive features of practice and repentance, following the tradition of the thought of T'ien T'ai.

趙宋시대의 천태학은 사명지례와 자운준식으로 대표될 수 있다. 사명지례는 이론가로 천태학의 정통을 확립한 분이고, 자운준식은 실천가로 참법위주의 수행을 하신 분이다. 본 논문은 참법 가운데에서도 정토사상에 관련된 준식의 사상과 그 특징을 살펴보고자 한다. 기존의 다른 학자들은 천태지의나 사명지례와 계통을 달리하여 그의 정토사상을 정리하였다고 한다. 그러나 그는 천태지의와 사명지례와 전통을 같이하면서 독특한 그의 정토사상을 체계화하였던 것이다. 그의 정토사상의 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째 그는 염불과 참법의 조화를 만들어 내었다. 그 형식은 『법화삼매참의』에 근거를 두고 내용은 정토사상으로 서술되어 있다. 천태의 전통적 참법인 5悔로 구성되어 理觀의 사상을 내용으로 한다. 두 번째는 염불과 의례의 결합이다. 의식은『법화삼매참의』의 10종류에 따른다. 또한 의식내용은 정토사상이며 理觀에 중점을 둔다. 세 번째 천태정토사상과 대중화의 실현이다. 이것은 『왕생정토결의행원이문』에 현실생활 속에서 실천할 수 있는 내용이 서술되어 있다. 그 가운데 중요한 것은 決疑門과 行願門이다. 이상 준식의 정토사상의 세 가지 특징을 살펴보았다. 준식은 천태학의 전통을 이어받으면서 실천적이고 참회적인 성격의 천태정토사상을 탄생시켰다.
